Marvel Fans Get Their First Glimpse of an ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ Set
Marvel Studios has entered one of its most secretive production stretches in years, juggling two Avengers films simultaneously while trying to keep plot details locked down as tightly as possible. That secrecy has become increasingly difficult to maintain, especially as physical construction on massive studio sets inevitably draws attention from anyone flying overhead or wandering near production facilities.
That’s exactly what appears to have happened with “Avengers: Secret Wars,” the sprawling sequel set to close out the current chapter of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. An aerial photo has now surfaced online showing what’s being described as the first set image tied to the production, revealing a sprawling construction site with multiple large structures, scaffolding, and equipment scattered across a wooded lot.
The image arrives amid a broader wave of behind-the-scenes activity surrounding the film’s early production stages. According to industry outlet Filmbase, which tracks job alerts and crew directories for UK film and television workers, Marvel’s production has already begun prep work at Pinewood Studios, with an August industry update confirming cameras had rolled before the entire crew was sent on an unusual five-week hiatus.
That pause is expected to run until the end of September, according to Filmbase’s reporting, meaning the newly surfaced set image likely captures a snapshot of construction work completed before that break began. Notably, the same report also indicated that Marvel’s separate “X-Men” reboot is expected to begin filming at what appears to be the same Pinewood facility, suggesting the studio is running an unusually packed production schedule across multiple flagship franchises simultaneously.
Directors Anthony and Joe Russo have spoken publicly about just how demanding this stretch has become, given they’re finishing post-production on “Avengers: Doomsday” while simultaneously prepping “Secret Wars” for its own shoot. Speaking with Collider following their San Diego Comic-Con panel, Anthony Russo described the overlapping workload as “complicated but thrilling,” acknowledging the sheer scale of managing two major productions at once.
When pressed on exactly when cameras would begin rolling on “Secret Wars,” Russo remained coy, saying only that it would happen soon, adding that the timeline was tight enough to make the filmmaking team “sweat.” Weeks later, the announcement of a five-week production hiatus suggests that pressure has only intensified as the shoot has gotten underway.
“Avengers: Secret Wars” currently serves as the fortieth film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the closing chapter of Phase Six and the Multiverse Saga, following directly from “Avengers: Doomsday.” The film’s release date has already shifted once, moving from its original May 7, 2027 slot to a new December 17, 2027 premiere, mirroring a similar delay experienced by “Doomsday,” which pushed from May to December 2026.
Both Avengers films are being shot at Pinewood Studios in England, continuing a production tradition that’s become closely associated with Marvel’s biggest tentpole releases in recent years. Robert Downey Jr. returns across both films fully embodying Doctor Doom, working from a screenplay co-written by Michael Waldron and Stephen McFeely, with the Russo brothers once again sharing directing duties as they did on “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Avengers: Endgame.”
Given how much speculation has already swirled around “Secret Wars” ending on Doctor Doom’s Battleworld throne, surrounded by resurrected heroes stripped of their memories, this newly surfaced construction image only adds fuel to ongoing fan theories about what kind of massive, multiverse-spanning sets the production will require to pull off that ambitious ending. With the crew’s hiatus expected to end soon, further glimpses of the film’s physical sets seem all but inevitable as production ramps back up.
