Kelly told PEOPLE that the producers and writers fell for him almost instantly, saying it is easy to love Dan and that they eventually asked if he would be willing to play a small character.

She recalled the moment fondly, explaining that once she asked if he would take the role, he agreed to give it a shot despite having no acting background to speak of.

The result was his appearance as Billy Brinks, a rancher character who shows up as Staten Kirkland’s biggest buyer in the story.

Billy Brinks made his debut in season one episode nine, appearing opposite Josh Duhamel’s Staten Kirkland and Eoin Macken’s Davis Collins. Reynolds and Kelly did not actually share a scene together on screen, which made the cameo feel more like a fun easter egg than a stunt casting moment.

Both of his co-stars had kind words for the rock star turned actor. Duhamel called him a good dude, while Macken said he did a great job in the role, according to reporting on the cameo.

The character’s presence in the cattle buying storyline gave Reynolds a genuine plot function rather than a throwaway walk on part, which is likely part of why fans latched onto Billy Brinks so quickly.

‘Ransom Canyon’ itself follows ranchers in a fictional rural Texas town, with generations of characters navigating old family history alongside new romantic entanglements. The series is based on Jodi Thomas’ book series of the same name, which spans eight novels along with a prequel.

Minka Kelly Wanted Billy Brinks Back for Season Two

Once season two rolled around, Kelly revealed she actually pushed to bring the character back in a bigger way. She told PEOPLE that the creative team tried to find a way to revive Billy Brinks, and that she personally suggested he could become part of a new love triangle centered on her character, Quinn.

Kelly described pitching the idea directly, saying she thought maybe the triangle could involve Billy Brinks this time around. Unfortunately for fans hoping to see more of the character, the plan did not come together.

Reynolds’ schedule simply did not allow for a return, with Kelly explaining that he was sadly unavailable because he is a little busy these days, referencing his ongoing commitments with Imagine Dragons.

Season two instead picks up roughly six months after Quinn left Ransom Canyon to chase a career performing with the New York Philharmonic, giving her storyline a very different shape than the one that might have included Billy Brinks.

Inside Dan Reynolds and Minka Kelly’s Relationship

Reynolds and Kelly have been linked since 2022, and their relationship has only grown more public since then. Kelly currently plays Quinn O’Grady, a concert pianist who returns to her hometown after time spent in New York City, and she shares much of the screen with Josh Duhamel and Patricia Clarkson.

Reynolds was previously married to singer and songwriter Aja Volman, with the couple tying the knot in 2011 after meeting in 2010. They eventually formed a band called Egyptian together and released a short EP before Reynolds announced their split, with the divorce finalized in March 2024.

Reynolds shares four children with his ex wife, and Kelly has become increasingly close with the kids since her relationship with him developed. The pair were recently spotted at Disneyland together, with Kelly sharing photos captioned about having no place she would rather be.
