There are a lot of different powerful and skilled fighters in Star Wars, and most of them belong to the side of the bad guys. During the Clone Wars, we saw two powerful fighters aligned with evil who were strong enough to pressure the good guys often. We are talking about the rogue former Sith Lord, Darth Maul, and the Separatist leader, General Grievous. So, in a fight between Maul and Grievous, who would win?

Darth Maul would win against General Grievous simply because he is much more powerful than the Cyborg general. Maul is a legitimate Force-sensitive warrior trained in the dark side by Darth Sidious. In that regard, he has more power compared to a non-Force user like Grievous.

It might be true that Grievous is strong and skilled enough to take on Jedi Masters on his own, but it is worth mentioning that Darth Maul is only weaker than a few Jedi Masters in Star Wars and is far stronger than any regular Jedi. That means that his power is beyond what Grievous has. That said, let’s look at this battle in greater detail.

Physical abilities

Dathomirian Zabraks are known to be some of the most resilient people in the entire galaxy, as they have the physical abilities that allow them to survive harsh conditions and even wounds that are supposed to kill.

They are also slightly stronger than humans. In that regard, Darth Maul’s physical abilities gave him the advantage against regular Jedi, as he was stronger and nimbler. On top of that, he was very resilient, having survived getting bisected right at the waist.

General Grievous was one of the strongest Kaleesh warriors, a race of people who venerated the most skilled and ferocious fighters among their people. However, while Grievous was the strongest of his kind, he paled in comparison to the power of a Jedi, and that was why he allowed himself to undergo a physical transformation that turned him into a cyborg with strength, speed, and durability levels far beyond what normal Jedi have.

At the end of the day, Grievous was simply stronger, faster, and more durable than Maul. Grievous’ strength was enough for him to crush metal. And while Maul was physically strong, he wasn’t at Grievous’ level.

Lightsaber skills

Darth Maul’s lightsaber skills are so advanced because he was trained by Darth Sidious, who was known as one of the strongest duelists in Star Wars. Maul’s abilities as a lightsaber duelist allowed him to pressure Qui-Gon Jinn in their first meeting on Tatooine. Using a dual-bladed lightsaber, he stood against Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi, killing the older Jedi Master. Of course, Maul’s skills were impressive enough that he could easily fight Obi-Wan in his prime, match Ahsoka Tano’s skills, and kill Inquisitors.

He was already a great swordsman and warrior before he became a cyborg, but Grievous’ skills as a duelist were so great that he could take on multiple Jedi at a time because he could wield four lightsabers at once due to his four limbs. Grievous was trained by Count Dooku, who was one of the best duelists within the Jedi Order before he became a Sith Lord. As such, Grievous was strong enough to take on Jedi Masters in lightsaber duels.

This is tough to judge because both Maul and Grievous were incredibly skilled lightsaber duelists. As such, we can’t say for certain who between them was more skilled, considering that Grievous had the advantage in terms of the number of limbs he could use.

Powers

Ever since he was a young boy, Maul’s powers were already unquestionably strong, as Darth Sidious chose him as his first apprentice when he sensed the strength of the dark side within the young Dathomirian Zabrak. Of course, Maul showcased his abilities in the Force several times in the storyline, as he could easily telepathically control people with ease and even crush a large hyperdrive with nothing but the power of the Force.

Unlike many of the other lightsaber-wielding characters in Star Wars, Grievous had no Force abilities whatsoever. He wasn’t born sensitive to the Force, which was why he saw himself as someone inferior to the power of a Jedi despite the fact that he was skilled. Even when he was already a cyborg, Grievous was weak to the Force as he could not defend himself against a Force-based attack.

Star Wars: Here Is Why General Grievous Hated the Jedi

This should already be easy to judge, as Grievous has no powers, whereas Maul was always stronger than most people in the Force. As such, it wouldn’t be impossible for Maul to be able to use the Force to ragdoll Grievous in a fight.

Intelligence

Being the former apprentice of Darth Sidious had its perks because the Sith Lords were not only trained to be powerful but were also taught to be cunning. As such, there were a lot of different instances wherein Maul’s intelligence came into play, such as when he formed his own criminal empire after realizing that he didn’t stand a chance against his former Master’s army. On top of that, he was also very skilled at manipulating people, as shown when he manipulated Ezra Bridger more than a few times.

General Grievous was always a gifted warrior, and his battle instincts often showed on the field whenever he went up against powerful Jedi Knights and Masters. As such, he was also a good commander, as Count Dooku trusted him to lead the Separatist troops into battle. Nevertheless, there were still limitations in what Grievous could do regarding his intelligence as he didn’t have the power of the Force to rely on when making decisions. Still, being a battle-tested warrior turned him into a reliable field general.

Even though Grievous was a tested and proven commander, Darth Maul was trained to be manipulative and cunning by the most cunning individual in the entire Star Wars franchise.

Feats

Right off the bat, Darth Maul showcased his strength when he took on Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan and even killed Jinn himself. After that, he continued to impress, as he survived getting bisected by relying on his boundless rage. Maul also fought and killed more Jedi during the Clone Wars and was strong enough to fight Obi-Wan Kenobi on par a few times. Then, during the Imperial era, he fought and killed two Inquisitors with minimal effort.

Maul vs Ahsoka

General Grievous’ feats were impressive, and he was always one of the few characters capable of fighting a true Jedi Master on par. On top of overwhelming and even killing Jedi Knights, he was strong enough to defeat Jedi Master Adi Gallia. He also overwhelmed countless undead Nightsisters when he massacred the entire population. And while he lost to Obi-Wan Kenobi, he made the fight difficult for the Jedi Master.

This is difficult to judge because Grievous himself has been able to fight Jedi Masters on par. However, Maul was always stronger than the average Jedi Master, as only a few Jedi were actually stronger than him.

Darth Maul vs. General Grievous: Who Is More Powerful & Who Wins?

At the end of the day, Darth Maul has the Force on his side, and that has allowed him to become more powerful than General Grievous. He was trained to be a Sith Lord, so he also had better training than most of the other lightsaber-wielding characters in Star Wars. Of course, Grievous is physically superior and possesses lightsaber skills on par with Maul. But Maul’s control over the Force gives him a significant advantage.
