Dave Filoni Confirms a Key ‘Star Wars’ Mystery Is Coming Back in ‘Ahsoka’ Season 2
‘Ahsoka‘ left fans with more questions than answers when its first season wrapped, and one of the biggest dangling threads involved a group of beings ‘Star Wars’ hadn’t touched in years. Baylan Skoll’s quiet obsession with ancient ruins on Peridea hinted at something much older and stranger than the show’s Thrawn-centric main plot, and Dave Filoni has spent the time since dropping breadcrumbs about what that thread actually means.
Season 2 is now confirmed to dig further into that mystery, with Filoni serving as writer across all eight episodes and directors including Bryce Dallas Howard and Jennifer Getzinger joining the production, which filmed in the United Kingdom from April through October of 2025. Rosario Dawson returns as Ahsoka Tano alongside Natasha Liu Bordizzo’s Sabine Wren, with Lars Mikkelsen’s Grand Admiral Thrawn continuing to lead the Imperial remnant storyline opposite the New Republic.
At the center of it all is Baylan Skoll’s search, now recast with Rory McCann taking over the role, which season one revealed was tied to towering statues connected to the Mortis Gods, the powerful Force-wielders first introduced back in ‘The Clone Wars.’ Filoni has now confirmed those deities are returning in a real way for season 2, not just as background lore.
“What we’re dealing with is: are you going to believe in this, or not?” Filoni said, teasing the nature of the Force deities’ role in the new season. “What is the danger if it’s real?”
That framing matters given how divisive the Mortis arc has historically been among fans, since the original ‘Clone Wars’ trilogy dealing with the Father, Son and Daughter leaned heavily into overt mysticism that some viewers felt clashed with the franchise’s usual tone. Bringing that concept into live-action gives Filoni a chance to test whether audiences accept the Mortis mythology as concrete canon or as something more ambiguous within the story itself.
Filoni has previously described the statues glimpsed in season one as intentionally cryptic, noting only a narrow slice of the fanbase would even recognize what they represented when they first appeared. That approach tracks with how he’s handled the material throughout, treating the Mortis Gods less as a returning cast of characters and more as a looming philosophical question hanging over Baylan’s entire arc.
With Ahsoka and Sabine’s fate on Peridea already tangled up with powerful Force-wielders from their time stranded there, weaving in the Mortis mythology gives the season a clear throughline connecting the show’s two major storylines. Baylan’s personal quest for these ancient beings appears set to collide directly with the main cast before the season’s conclusion, according to plot details tied to the confrontation building around his discovery.
