DC Studios Co-CEO Drops Shocking Production Update on Gorilla Grodd and Jimmy Olsen HBO Series
Information from recent comments by DC Studios leadership, including updates shared by co-CEO James Gunn and producer Peter Safran, gives a clearer but still uncertain picture of the future of the DC Universe slate.
One of the main points is that the DC Universe is still being shaped after its reboot under the “Gods and Monsters” chapter. Some projects are moving forward, some are delayed, and others are no longer active.
A major confirmed update is that the film Man of Tomorrow is currently in production. It is expected to be released in summer 2027. The film is part of the next wave of DC storytelling and is already filming, which makes it one of the most stable projects in the lineup right now.
At the same time, James Gunn confirmed that some earlier announced projects are still alive. These include the Booster Gold television series and the Paradise Lost series. Both are still in development, even if they have not moved into active production yet. These shows are meant to expand the DC universe into different corners of its world, focusing on lesser-known characters and mythology.
However, not everything is moving forward smoothly. One of the original planned projects, The Authority, has run into major issues. The movie was first announced as part of the DCU reboot plan under Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters. It was described by Gunn as a “big movie” centered on a violent superhero team from the WildStorm universe. Over time, though, the project slowed down and has now lost momentum compared to other titles in development.
A newer and more surprising update involves a possible Gorilla Grodd and Jimmy Olsen project for HBO. According to comments from DC Studios leadership, this idea may already be in production or close to it, though details are still unclear. Producer Peter Safran reportedly suggested that the project could already be filming this year, which would make it one of the most advanced projects in the current DC TV slate.
The idea of combining Gorilla Grodd, a super-intelligent ape villain, with Jimmy Olsen, a reporter from the Superman world, has caught attention because it mixes two very different tones. One side is dark and villain-focused, while the other is grounded in journalism and everyday life in Metropolis. This contrast is part of what makes the project stand out in early discussions.
At the moment, there are still only a few confirmed release dates in the DC Universe. The HBO series Lanterns is moving forward, along with films like Supergirl and Clayface. These, along with Man of Tomorrow, make up the clearest part of the upcoming schedule.
But beyond those titles, much of the DC slate is still unclear. The future of Booster Gold, Paradise Lost, and the Gorilla Grodd / Jimmy Olsen project depends on how production continues to develop over the next year.
Right now, DC Studios is in a transition phase. Some projects are solid and moving ahead, while others are still being reshaped or waiting for the right moment to fully begin.
