The upcoming Lanterns has an official release window set for August, according to DC Studios. The update was also supported by a short teaser posted on X by James Gunn, which confirmed the timing.

The series is part of the new DC Universe and will stream on HBO. It is the third television project in this shared universe and continues the studio’s plan to expand its stories across both film and TV.

The show focuses on two Green Lanterns, Hal Jordan and John Stewart. They are played by Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre. The story follows them as they investigate a murder case in rural America. What starts as a local investigation turns into something much larger and more dangerous.

The tone of the series is more like a crime drama than a typical superhero show. It is built around mystery and investigation, with strong influence from detective-style storytelling.

Kelly Macdonald plays a small-town sheriff who becomes involved in the case. Nathan Fillion appears as Guy Gardner, another Green Lantern known for his aggressive personality.

The supporting cast includes Ulrich Thomsen as Sinestro, a former Lantern with a dark past, along with Garret Dillahunt, Poorna Jagannathan, and Nicole Ari Parker in additional roles. Other cast members include Jason Ritter and Paul Ben-Victor.

Production on the series took place in 2025 with several directors involved across different episodes. The show will run for eight episodes in its first season. It is part of the DC Universe chapter titled Gods and Monsters.

According to DC Studios, the goal of the series is to show a different side of superhero storytelling by mixing space-based mythology with grounded crime investigation. The project is led by DC Studios co-heads James Gunn and Peter Safran.

This is a smart direction for DC because it tries something different from the usual superhero formula. A detective-style Green Lantern story could feel fresh if the mystery is strong and the characters are well developed. It also helps expand the DC Universe in a more grounded way.
