After bringing Deadpool to the big screen in 2016 (we’re not counting that version from 2009), Ryan Reynolds became one of those “no one could ever play this role but him” types of actors. And Marvel Studios was fully aware of that because there was never any doubt in anyone’s mind that anyone could ever replace Deadpool once he joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

As we all know, Ryan Reynolds played the Merc with a Mouth in two ‘Deadpool’ movies in 2016 and 2018. In 2019, Disney completed the acquisition of Fox, which brought the rights for Deadpool, X-Men, and Fantastic Four back to Marvel Studios after they were sold to Fox in 1994. This acquisition ended Fox’s ‘X-Men’ movie series, where ‘Deadpool’ movies also take place, but now we know that Reynolds will return to his most-known role in the first-ever R-rated MCU movie in May 2024.

‘Deadpool 3’ is rumored to be a much more “Multiverse” movie than we expected!

We already know that ‘Deadpool 3’ will bring back Hugh Jackman as the Wolverine after Jackman initially retired from the role after 2017’s ‘Logan.’ But from all the rumors and reports we’ve been getting, it appears that his return is only the peak of the iceberg. Previous reports even mentioned more returns from the original ‘X-Men’ movies, and the most recent rumor by @CanWeGetToast indicates that ‘Deadpool 3’ might feature multiple variants of both Deadpool and Wolverine from different parts of the Marvel Multiverse.

We live in a time when blockbuster franchises like to appeal to fans’ nostalgia by bringing back popular actors in roles to which they said farewell long ago. In 2021, ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ brought back former Spider-Man stars Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield, and most recent superhero movies like ‘Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse’ and DC’s ‘The Flash’ were literally a whole festival of fan service.

We all assumed that ‘Deadpool 3’ might dip its fingers into that Multiverse stuff (combined with his usual fourth-wall-breaking) to make a fluid transition of the character from Fox’s ‘X-Men’ franchise to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but it seems we can expect a wilder ride than we might’ve anticipated thus far.

Apart from Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, confirmed returning stars in ‘Deadpool 3’ are Morena Baccarin as Vanessa, Leslie Uggams as Blind Al, Karan Soni as Dopinder, Brianna Hildebrand as Negasonic Teenage Warhead, Shioli Kutsuna as Yukio, Stefan Kapičić as Colossus, and Rob Delaney as Peter. Emma Corrin has been cast in an undisclosed villain role, and Matthew Macfadyen also joined the movie in an undisclosed role.

Directed by Shawn Levy from the screenplay written by Rhett Reese, Paul Wernick, Zeb Wells, Ryan Reynolds, and Shawn Levy, ‘Deadpool 3’ is set to be released on May 3, 2024, according to Marvel Studios’ latest schedule.
