How Is Wolverine Alive in ‘Deadpool 3’? Explained
When Ryan Reynolds posted a video stating that Wolverine would return in the upcoming ‘Deadpool 3’ movie, many fans went crazy about it. And while we can’t wait for the movie to be released, some questions tend to pop up. For example, we know that Wolverine died in the movie ‘Logan,’ so how is it possible that he is alive in Deadpool 3?
Wolverine is alive in ‘Deadpool 3’ because of time travel and the different timelines created. The movie ‘Logan’ was about the moment when Wolverine died, and that won’t change or be altered in any way. However, we’ll see a younger version of Wolverine before his old age and illness due to time travel and the events of ‘Deadpool 3’ happening before that.
Time travel and the existence of a multiverse are not new in MCU, but something that’s been going on for some time now. The only difference in the last few years was the acquisition of 21st Century Fox by The Walt Disney Company, which opened the doors for many new possibilities and crossovers. With that in mind, let’s see what we know about Wolverine being alive in the next Deadpool movie.
Deadpool ‘cleaned up’ the timelines at the end of the ‘Deadpool 2’ movie
Wolverine and Deadpool have always had a special relationship throughout comic book history, and Wade mentioned Logan more than once in the previous two Deadpool movies. So, it is fair to say that this is a team-up we have eagerly awaited for many years.
In September of 2022, Ryan Reynolds, the actor who portrays Deadpool, posted a video on social media revealing the big news about the upcoming movie – Hugh Jackman will play Logan again. However, considering that Wolverine died the last time we saw him, his new appearance raised the question of how he can be alive in ‘Deadpool 3,’ and there are two theories. The first one is that he can because he is; he didn’t die just yet.
‘Logan’ is set in the year 2029, and that era is marked as dark for mutants since they are facing their extinction, and Wolverine is weaker and older than we were used to seeing him. The upcoming Deadpool movie will take place before those events, but even if that is not the case, and the events of these two movies are from two different timelines, we also have an answer thanks to Hugh Jackman, who explained what they plan to do.
In one of the interviews, Hugh Jackman said when asked about his return as Wolverine that it wasn’t planned even though Ryan Reynolds was persuasive for years. He decided to be a part of the upcoming movie because he wanted a different approach to Wolverine’s character, and the dynamics with Deadpool could be really good.
And as for how he could return and not mess with ‘Logan’s’ timeline, Jackman said that it is thanks to the device Marvel world now has where they can move around the timelines so now they can go back, and he describes it all as ‘science.’ That way, the ‘Logan’ timeline would not have interfered, which was important to him.
We know that at the end of ‘Deadpool 2’ Yukio and Negasonic Teenage Warhead repair Cable’s time-travel device, and Wade then uses the device to ‘clean up’ the timelines. So, the time travel device Jackman is referring to is most likely the same one Deadpool now possesses, and that is how they’ll eventually end up in the same timeline.
What do we know about the ‘Deadpool 3’ movie so far?
As already mentioned, on 27 September 2022, Reynolds posted a tweet that had the ball rolling, and the audience knew what to expect in the upcoming movie.
That meant two things: we’ll see one of the most anticipated duos on the big screen, and Deadpool will officially become an official part of the MCU. The movie is set to be released on May 3, 2024, directed by Shawn Levy. The events of ‘Logan’ will remain untouched – Wolverine is dead in that timeline; they are not touching that.
This will be the tenth time that Jackman plays Wolverine, with his first portrayal of the character being way back in the 2000s in the ‘X-Men’ movie. And even though everyone, including Hugh, thought that ‘Logan’ was the last time we’d see him on big screens as Wolverine, that turned out to be false, and luckily so.
The movie started filming despite all the writer’s strikes flooding Holywood these days. Besides the main duo, Deadpool and Wolverine, another two important characters – Colossus and Vanessa will also return. Colossus became the best buddy with Wade in the last two Deadpool movies, even though they would never admit that, so it will be fun to see their chemistry again. As for Vanessa, we know that she died in the Deadpool sequel, so we’ll have to wait and see what her role will be in all of this. Oh, and Dopinder and Blind Al will be back as well.
This is one of the most anticipated movies, and we can’t wait to see what it has in store for us. May 3, 2024, is the day when we’ll get all the answers.
