‘Death Stranding Isolations’ Teaser Trailer Introduces a Lonely Corner of Hideo Kojima’s World
Hideo Kojima’s world has always been about connection, or the painful lack of it. The ‘Death Stranding’ games asked players to haul cargo across a fractured America, stitching isolated settlements back together one delivery at a time. That makes the idea of a story about the people left on the margins feel like a natural next step.
The story takes place in North America after Sam reconnects the continent through the Chiral Network, but the reconnection is not as tidy as it sounds. As America is reborn from the ashes, the renewed connections that bind it together bring about new and unforeseen consequences. That is the backdrop for a series that now has its first real look.
Rotten Tomatoes shared the first teaser trailer for ‘Death Stranding Isolations’ on X, confirming that the new anime streams exclusively on Disney+ in 2027. The post’s 0:35 clip leans on atmosphere over plot, showing a lone figure with a heavy pack standing at the edge of a vast crater while a thin beam of light cuts through the haze below.
That crater is no accident. The teaser is paired with the line “My mom became a crater,” a tagline that frames the story as deeply personal. In the series, the souls of the dead become stranded in the world of the living, and contact with the living triggers massive explosions known as “Death Stranding,” leaving a young girl isolated from the world.
The official pitch is broader than one character. The series is described as a completely new story, separate from that of the video games, following a young man and woman as they set out on an adventure. So far, four characters are known: an old man seeking salvation outside of Bridges’ network, a female warrior, a boy with a grudge against Bridges, and a lonely young girl.
Fans of the games should note that the show is not a retelling. It is an original, hand-drawn 2D animated series set in the same universe but on a separate narrative. In the teaser, we see glimpses of the young girl, who is also a Porter, having nightmares about the BTs, or Beached Things.
The team behind it carries serious anime credentials. Hideo Kojima is executive producer, Takayuki Sano is director, and Ilya Kuvshinov is the original character designer, with E&H production handling animation. E&H is the studio behind ‘Ninja Kamui,’ and Kuvshinov previously worked on ‘Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045.’
The writing side got a boost too. The studio confirmed that author Tow Ubukata joins as series composition and screenplay writer. For a franchise known for dense, heady storytelling, having a novelist in that role is an intriguing choice.
Where it will stream has shifted slightly in the details. The trailer confirms the anime will stream on both Hulu and Disney+ when it premieres in 2027. There is still no exact release date.
This is also not the only anime project in Kojima’s pipeline. Another ‘Death Stranding: Mosquito’ anime movie is in the works as well. Between that and the new series, the franchise is clearly expanding well beyond the console.
For now, the teaser works as a mood piece, and a striking one. A single traveler, a gaping crater, and one line about a mother lost is enough to make 2027 feel like a long wait.
