Disney’s Hercules Remake Reportedly Stuck in Limbo as Creative Disagreements With Russo Brothers Stall Progress

One of the next big remakes Disney still has in the works is Hercules. The project was first announced in 2020 and had a lot of buzz at the time. It started with Dave Callaham, who worked on Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, writing the script.
The Russo Brothers, known for their work on the Avengers movies, came on to produce it. Eventually, Guy Ritchie joined the team as director and helped update the script.
Even though the movie is still in development, there hasn’t been much news about it for a while. Now, a report from insider Daniel Richtman might explain why things have been so quiet. According to Richtman, there have been “creative tensions” behind the scenes.
The conflict seems to come down to different visions for the story. The Russo Brothers apparently want to make Hades the main character, focusing the film around him. Disney doesn’t agree. They want a remake that stays close to the animated original.
The Russo brothers’ Hercules movie for Disney is still in development, but creative tensions seem to be brewing. The Russos want to take a new direction, centering the story around Hades and even retitling the film Hades, while Disney is pushing for a more faithful remake of the animated classic.
Neither idea seems very exciting to fans. The trend of giving villains their own movies, like what Disney did with Maleficent, was popular for a while, but that was over a decade ago. A lot of people feel like that type of story doesn’t really work anymore.
On the other hand, audiences also haven’t been showing up for remakes that just copy the original. Recent films like The Little Mermaid and Snow White didn’t do as well as Disney had hoped.
So now, Hercules is stuck in the middle. Disney reportedly doesn’t want to take big risks, but fans might not be thrilled about another safe remake either. The success of Lilo & Stitch could make the studio more confident again, but it’s still unclear if that will help Hercules move forward, or just make the arguments behind the scenes even worse.
