The DC Universe may belong to Kara Zor-El right now, but someone else made a strong case for the spotlight at the world premiere of ‘Supergirl’.

Rachel Brosnahan, the Emmy-winning actress who plays Lois Lane in James Gunn’s rebooted DC Universe, turned up to the Brooklyn premiere of the new film in a look that stopped the night in its tracks, reminding everyone that even when Supergirl is the headline, Lois Lane has a way of making the front page anyway.

The world premiere of ‘Supergirl’ was held on June 22 at The Plaza at 300 Ashland in Brooklyn, New York. The event drew much of the DC Universe’s core ensemble, with lead actress Milly Alcock joined on the carpet by her co-stars, including David Corenswet, Nicholas Hoult, director Craig Gillespie, and DC Studios co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran. It was exactly the kind of star-studded showcase a superhero franchise needs to build momentum ahead of a major theatrical opening.

Brosnahan arrived in a deep burgundy beaded gown that immediately commanded attention. The floor-length dress featured intricate all-over embroidery, a plunging neckline with a lace-up detail at the front, a thigh-high slit, and a dramatically low open back that became the true talking point of the look.

According to WWD, her stylist Alexandra Mandelkorn has previously described the approach to dressing Brosnahan for DC events as a fashion journey, with pieces chosen to blend Brosnahan’s own sensibility with nods to the world of Lois Lane. The red carpet look here felt entirely consistent with that philosophy, using dark glamour and couture construction to say something without a single word.

Brosnahan has quietly become one of the most closely watched red carpet presences in the entire DCU orbit. During the ‘Superman’ press tour last summer, she and Mandelkorn built a cohesive fashion narrative around Lois Lane’s identity as a bold, cosmopolitan journalist, including an Armani Privé gown described by Mandelkorn as feeling like the draping of Superman’s cape. The approach drew widespread attention and positioned Brosnahan as a serious fashion player within the superhero promotional circuit.

Her appearance at the ‘Supergirl’ premiere is notable for another reason beyond the look itself. Brosnahan is not a credited cast member of ‘Supergirl’, appearing at the event as part of the broader DC Universe family rather than as a lead. Yet the reaction to her presence on the carpet was immediate, with fans and entertainment outlets picking up her look almost immediately after the photos circulated online. That kind of organic attention is exactly what Warner Bros. needs heading into a high-stakes opening weekend.

The ‘Supergirl’ premiere itself underlined something important about how Gunn and Safran have chosen to build their DC Universe. Rather than siloing each film as a standalone event, the presence of Corenswet, Brosnahan, and Hoult at a premiere for a film in which they have supporting or cameo roles signals a deliberate attempt to present the DCU as a cohesive world, one where audiences are invited to follow the universe as much as any individual character.

Alcock herself has already been confirmed to return as Kara Zor-El in the upcoming ‘Superman: Man of Tomorrow’, the planned 2027 sequel to James Gunn’s 2025 film. Her debut in ‘Supergirl’ is therefore not simply a standalone movie but an introduction to a character the franchise intends to keep at its centre for years to come. The premiere framing, with the wider ensemble gathered in Brooklyn in a show of collective support, was a statement of intent that the new DCU is playing a long game.

For now, though, the images circulating from the night tell their own story. Alcock led in the film. Brosnahan led on the carpet. And the DCU, at least for one evening in Brooklyn, looked like a universe worth getting excited about.
