Disney’s upcoming live-action Tangled remake is already becoming one of the studio’s most closely watched projects, especially after the mixed results of recent live-action adaptations. While Disney continues bringing its animated classics to the big screen in new forms, the box office performance of Moana has raised questions about which movies can still connect with audiences.

According to box office reports, the live-action Moana remake opened far below expectations, earning $43 million domestically and $95 million worldwide. The film had been expected to perform much better, especially with a reported production budget of around $250 million. Its international opening also fell short, bringing in about $52 million instead of the projected $75 million.

The disappointing start has renewed discussions about Disney’s strategy with live-action remakes. Unlike older classics such as The Lion King, Beauty and the Beast, and Aladdin, newer animated films may not have enough time to build the same level of nostalgia before being remade. That could make the upcoming live-action Tangled movie a very different situation.

Disney’s original Tangled was released in 2010 and introduced audiences to Rapunzel, Flynn Rider, and the magical world of Corona. The animated film became a major success for Disney, earning nearly $600 million worldwide and helping restart the studio’s modern fairy tale era.

The live-action version is currently scheduled for release in 2028, giving the original movie more time to grow with fans. Unlike Moana, which received a sequel just recently, Tangled has had more than a decade to become a nostalgic favorite for audiences who grew up watching it.

The project is expected to bring the classic story of Rapunzel to a new generation while also attracting longtime fans of the animated film. The original movie’s mix of adventure, romance, comedy, and memorable songs has made it one of Disney’s most popular modern princess stories.

The success of other Disney remakes has shown that timing and audience connection matter. Films based on older animated classics have often performed better because viewers have stronger childhood memories attached to them. Movies like Lilo & Stitch, The Lion King, Aladdin, and Beauty and the Beast all became major box office hits after being reimagined as live-action projects.

What do you think about Disney bringing Rapunzel’s story to live action?

The recent struggles of Moana, however, suggest that simply remaking a popular animated movie is not always enough. Audiences may want more than a familiar title, especially when the original film is still fresh in their minds.

With Tangled, Disney appears to have a property that fits the formula that has worked best for its remakes. The story is familiar but not overexposed, the characters remain popular, and fans have had years to build a connection with Rapunzel’s journey.

As Disney prepares to bring the “best day ever” back to theaters, the live-action Tangled movie could become one of the studio’s biggest tests of whether classic fairy tales still have the power to bring audiences together.
