Doctor Doom’s Army Marches Through Tokyo in a Giant ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Parade

Marvel’s campaign for ‘Avengers: Doomsday‘ has produced statues, drone shows and throne replicas around the world, but few stunts have been as theatrical as a street parade. In Japan, a Doctor Doom parade turned a stretch of central Tokyo into a procession of green cloaks and metal masks. The footage has become one of the most eye-catching moments of the campaign so far.

The spectacle fits a pattern. Marvel has been looking for ways to make its main villain feel like a physical presence, and each market has received its own version. Japan’s contribution was to blend the villain’s menace with the country’s love of festivals.

The clip shows a line of hooded figures in dark green robes and silver masks walking down a wide city road, with spectators watching from the pavement and green flags flying in the background. The marchers move in a slow, deliberate rhythm that gives the footage an eerie feel. Nearby buildings and office windows frame the scene, which makes the cloaked figures look even more out of place.

The event took place on Sunday, November 1, as part of the Nihonbashi-Kyobashi Festival, a long-running local celebration in Tokyo. Japanese outlets report that about 280 people took part, including professional cosplayers and a high school marching band. The parade covered roughly 1.4 kilometers of Chuo-dori, from Kyobashi to Nihonbashi.

The centerpiece was a giant Doctor Doom float, measuring about 4 meters long and 4.5 meters high and weighing around 1.5 tons. Cinema Today reports that the float recreates Doom on the throne seen in the film’s trailer. It followed a group of about 60 cloaked members of the so-called Doom Corps, who carried Avengers flags behind it.

Ahead of them, cosplayers dressed as heroes and villains including Iron Man, Thor, Doctor Doom, Cyclops and Spider-Man led the procession and interacted with spectators. The marching band played the Avengers theme and the Marvel Studios fanfare, and a giant ‘Doomsday’ version of the Avengers logo appeared in the lineup. Together, the elements turned the road into a moving piece of promotion.

The launch also included an announcement from the Japanese promotion. Nobu, one half of the comedy duo Chidori, was introduced as the new Avengers ambassador at a kickoff ceremony held at the TODA Building plaza in Kyobashi. He joins a short list of celebrity ambassadors that has included actor Yuki Yamada and Koji Mukai of the group Snow Man.

Nobu appeared in a special costume with a mask among the Doom Corps before revealing himself, and he marched alongside the float while greeting fans. He promised to promote the film loudly on his television shows and said he would work ‘Doomsday’ into his comedic comparisons. Japanese reports described the unveiling as a playful three-part gag, a nod to the country’s comedy traditions.

The parade was announced in September, when Marvel Studios invited fans to join. Participants could wear costumes of Avengers characters and other Marvel figures, with Iron Man, Spider-Man and Deadpool outfits explicitly welcomed. The studio chose to take part in an established local festival rather than create a standalone event.

That approach gave the promotion built-in foot traffic and community goodwill. It also allowed Marvel to blend into Japan’s festival culture instead of simply imposing a marketing display. The result felt more like a celebration than an advertisement.

The parade follows other ‘Doomsday’ activations in the country. A Doctor Doom statue recently debuted in the lobby of an Osaka cinema, and a larger Doom statue seated on a throne has been photographed beside a building in Japan. Marvel Studios also hosted a ‘Hero’s Day’ announcement event in Tokyo earlier this year, and new faction posters have appeared in Japanese theaters.

The movie opens in Japan on December 18, the same day as in the United States, and Walt Disney Japan is handling distribution. That simultaneous release has been confirmed for some time, and the parade serves as another reminder of the date. The campaign appears to be building toward a major opening in a market that has long supported the franchise.

Elsewhere, South Korea held a 2,000-drone Marvel show, and Doom’s throne has appeared at expos in Shanghai and the Philippines. Theaters in the United States and Argentina have also staged their own displays. Each version has put a local spin on the same green-lit throne and metal mask.

That consistency has helped the villain become a global symbol before the film arrives. A parade adds motion and sound to what had mostly been static displays. It also gives fans a chance to participate rather than simply observe.

Online reaction to the clip has been enthusiastic, with viewers praising the eerie uniformity of the marchers and the scale of the float. Others joked that it looked like Doom had finally arrived to take over Tokyo. The footage has also fueled the sense that this release is being treated as a global event.

With the film’s December opening getting closer, more stunts like this are likely. Whether it’s a statue, a drone show or a procession of masked soldiers, the studio seems determined to keep Doom front and center. And for fans in Japan, the parade offered a rare chance to see the villain’s army up close.

Which city should host the next giant Doctor Doom promotional event?
