Does Alicent Really Kill Aemond in ‘House of the Dragon’ Season 3?
‘House of the Dragon‘ has spent three seasons building toward a question fans never expected to seriously entertain, whether Alicent Hightower could actually turn against her own son. Season 3 episode 7 finally answers it, and the fallout has left viewers stunned.
The episode, titled The Dragon in Winter, sends Alicent to Harrenhal under Rhaenyra’s orders, and what unfolds is far messier than a simple assassination plot.
Alicent’s Mission from Rhaenyra
Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen ordered Aemond’s own mother to kill him, reasoning that sending soldiers would only cause him to flee and hide elsewhere. Rhaenyra apparently believed that only someone Aemond trusted completely could get close enough to finish the job.
Alicent is sent to Harrenhal in what is described as an unexpected and unsettling plan to get her to kill her own son, Aemond Targaryen. It is only after Helaena Targaryen figures out where Aemond has been hiding through her visions that the queen sets this plan into motion.
When Alicent arrives at Harrenhal, she tells Aemond a story about escaping the Red Keep and leads him out to meet the man who supposedly rescued her, Ser Adrian Redfort. Alicent lies about how she escaped, then embraces her son and kisses him on the cheek before telling him that Aegon is most likely dead.
Ser Adrian Redfort and Aemond’s Paranoia
The introduction to Ser Adrian does not go the way Alicent planned. Aemond kills the knight within seconds of meeting him because he refuses to risk a stranger learning the secrets of Harrenhal.
As his horrified mother looks on, Aemond explains that there are secrets here and that he can trust no stranger. He then lays out his plan to claim his own throne from Harrenhal, insisting that Rhaenyra will eventually fall and that they simply need to wait for the right moment.
Alys Rivers, who has been sheltering Aemond, is visibly shaken by this declaration and pulls him aside to warn him that her plans never included his mother. She tells him plainly that Alicent has come to do him harm, but Aemond refuses to believe it.
The dinner scene that follows only deepens the unease. When Helaena makes a comment about how dragons change a person, Rhaenyra takes visible offense, adding another layer of tension to an already strained gathering.
Alicent Poisons Her Son
Alicent slips outside during the meal and takes a dagger off Ser Adrian’s corpse before making her way to her son’s room. She finds him practicing swordsmanship, and though he pauses to accept the spiced wine she has brought, the moment carries an unmistakable sense of dread.
Alicent tugs at her son’s heartstrings by telling him that he is all she has left, even as she pushes him toward a scheme that seems designed to end with his death. Later, Aemond staggers into the dining room, whispers Alys’ name, and collapses, apparently poisoned by whatever was hidden in the wine.
Alicent poisons her son and leaves Harrenhal believing she has actually killed him. Fans have long wondered whether Alicent could be relentless enough to kill her own child, and the show delivers a shocking but undeniable yes, complicated by everything that led her there.
Is Aemond Actually Dead?
Despite how final the poisoning appears, there is real reason to doubt Aemond is gone for good. Aemond appears to die after drinking the poisoned wine, but the latest trailer for the next episode hints at his potential survival.
Alys may have intervened to save Aemond from the poison, since he is seen alive in the footage teasing the next chapter. That would track with her earlier warning to him, since she seemed far more aware of Alicent’s true intentions than Aemond ever was.
Book readers already know that in Fire and Blood, Aemond meets his end differently, dying above God’s Eye at the hands of Daemon Targaryen after their dragons clash and both men are lost to the lake below. Since this assassination attempt never happened in George R. R. Martin’s novel, the show is now operating in completely uncharted territory.
The season 3 finale of ‘House of the Dragon’ premieres August 8, 2026 on HBO and HBO Max, and it should finally reveal how Aemond’s story actually plays out.
