Does ‘Fjord’ Have a Post-Credits Scene? What to Expect When Mungiu’s Palme d’Or Winner Fades Out
Cristian Mungiu’s ‘Fjord‘ is not the type of movie that comes with a bag of tricks. The Romanian filmmaker’s courtroom drama, which won the Palme d’Or at Cannes, is built on tension, moral ambiguity and long, patient scenes, and it asks viewers to sit with discomfort instead of rushing to a resolution.
The film stars Sebastian Stan and Renate Reinsve as a devout Romanian Norwegian couple whose lives unravel after they move to a remote Norwegian village. It runs 146 minutes, and Neon released it in the United States on October 9, with a limited rollout that has built word of mouth through festival buzz and strong reviews.
Because so many movies now tuck a surprise behind the credits, it is a natural question for anyone heading into a theater. So, does ‘Fjord’ have a post-credits scene? No. There is no mid-credits scene and no post-credits scene, so viewers can leave once the story ends without missing anything extra.
A hidden scene would feel out of place here. ‘Fjord’ is a standalone drama about a family caught between clashing value systems, and it has no franchise to set up. There are no sequel teases, cameos or universe-building to deliver, and the film’s power depends on how its final image lingers.
That final image is one of the most discussed parts of the movie. After the family leaves Norway, Noora races to the water to say goodbye to Elia and appears to walk across the fjord, a moment that Mungiu leaves open to both a practical and a spiritual reading. Adding anything after it would risk undercutting the ambiguity that the film is built around.
Mungiu has spent his career making movies that refuse easy answers, and ‘Fjord’ continues that approach. The story is loosely inspired by the true story of the Bodnariu family, whose children were taken by Norwegian authorities, and it never settles whether the parents are guilty of abuse or whether the system overreached.
That refusal to choose a side is the point. The film lets everyone be sincere and flawed, and it leaves viewers to wrestle with their own sympathies. A post-credits button would have been a distraction from that tension.

Reviews have been largely positive. ‘Fjord’ holds a 90% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 99 reviews, and critics have praised the performances and screenplay. Some have been less convinced, with one major critic calling it an underpowered movie while another gave it a perfect score, so the reaction is not unanimous.
It also earned Mungiu his second Palme d’Or, along with the FIPRESCI Prize and the Prize of the Ecumenical Jury at Cannes, and it was selected as Romania’s entry for the Best International Feature Film category at the Academy Awards.

If you’re watching, there is no reason to wait. The more useful thing to do is stay in your seat for a minute and let the ending settle, since most viewers leave the theater with plenty to discuss.
The film’s closing moments are designed to spark conversation about faith, parental rights and the role of the state, and the credits offer a quiet moment to reflect on what you just saw.
‘Fjord’ ends when the story ends. There is no teaser, no stinger and no setup for another movie, which suits a film that trusts its audience to carry the questions home.
What do you think about Fjord skipping a post-credits scene?
