Does Magneto Really Die in ‘X-Men ’97’ Season 2 Episode 4, or Is This Another Fake-Out
‘X-Men ’97‘ has never been shy about killing its favorites, and its latest gut punch might be the biggest one yet. Season 2 Episode 4, titled ‘Rise of Apocalypse Part 2,’ closes with a death that fans are still processing hours after it aired.
The episode sees Apocalypse murder Magneto in a brutal final scene, and unlike some of the show’s earlier fake-outs, this one looks disturbingly final. In the closing moments of the episode, Apocalypse murdered Magneto while Professor X watched in horror.
How Magneto Dies in “Rise of Apocalypse, Part 2”
The setup for Magneto’s death stretches back through the two-part ‘Rise of Apocalypse’ storyline. With the X-Men scattered across the timeline, each group works to stop Apocalypse in their own way, and in Ancient Egypt, the team led by Professor X and Magneto attempts to stop the mutant En Sabah Nur from becoming Apocalypse.
Realizing they had a chance to change history, Magneto led the charge in convincing En Sabah Nur that mutants could be treated fairly and that he didn’t have to use his powers for evil. It is a classic ‘X-Men’ gambit, literally trying to talk a future villain out of his own destiny.
That plan collapses fast. A big fight ensues, and when En Sabah Nur is transformed into Apocalypse, Magneto makes a decision for the team, sending the rest of the group back to the 1990s using Bishop’s time bands, leaving only himself and Professor X behind. From there, things spiral toward the tragedy fans are now talking about.
Apocalypse pilots his ship toward the city ruled by Rama Tut, who reveals himself to be Kang the Conqueror, and flees, with Apocalypse then forming a black hole over the city to try to kill everyone inside. Magneto and Professor X work together to lure Apocalypse away from the ship long enough for Magneto to ram it directly into the black hole, saving most of the city, though the effort leaves him badly wounded.
The Brutal Final Moments of Magneto’s Death Scene
What happens next is the moment everyone is reacting to online. While Professor X watches, Apocalypse walks over to the wounded Magneto, picks him up by the head, and blasts him to atoms. It is a far cry from the character’s usual comic book exits.
Other outlets describe the kill in equally grim terms. En Sabah Nur, furious that the X-Men had lied to him, fully transforms into his robotic Apocalypse form and uses his powers to make Magneto’s head explode, killing him instantly. Either way you slice it, this was not a quiet farewell.
The show even leaned into the moment’s weight musically. The same somber score that played over the end credits when Gambit died in Season 1 Episode 6 returns here for Magneto. For longtime viewers, that callback alone was enough to confirm this death was meant to hit hard.
Is Magneto’s Death Actually Permanent This Time?
Here is where things get complicated, because ‘X-Men ’97’ has burned viewers before. The ending marks a significant turning point because the show had previously suggested Magneto’s death on more than one occasion before ultimately revealing he had survived. That history alone gives skeptical fans plenty of reason to hold their breath.
The comics themselves do not exactly inspire confidence in permanence either. Magneto has died repeatedly across Marvel Comics history, including in the Judgment Day crossover, in Inhumans vs. X-Men, and even earlier in X-Men number 45 and number 63, both times by seemingly falling to his death, plus a death by Asteroid M explosion that was lightly adapted into the Season 1 finale of ‘X-Men ’97.’

Some writers even joked outright that Magneto is essentially impossible to permanently kill in the comics, pointing to his history of returning as a clone named Joseph or through full universe reboots.
Timeline mechanics could also offer an escape hatch. Since the Children of the Atom were spread across the timeline trying to stop Apocalypse, nothing is technically stopping them from going back to the moment before Magneto’s death and changing it, especially given how ‘Days of Future Past’ already established that time travel can avert certain events even if the broader future stays fixed.
What Magneto’s Death Means for Season 2’s Remaining Episodes
The emotional stakes here go beyond shock value. Magneto’s death comes after Season 2 devoted considerable attention to rebuilding the bond between Magnus and Charles, which makes the loss land even harder for Professor X.
Where the story goes from here is still wide open. The next episode of ‘X-Men ’97’ Season 2 is scheduled to premiere on July 15, 2026, and this development dramatically changes the direction of the season while showing just how dangerous Apocalypse has become.
There is also a real question of how Professor X responds to watching his oldest friend die in front of him. Whether he channels that grief into something darker remains one of the biggest open threads heading into the back half of the season.
So is Magneto really gone for good, or is ‘X-Men ’97’ setting up another timeline rescue before the finale, and how do you think Professor X moves forward now that he has watched Magnus die right in front of him.
