Elisabeth Moss on ‘The Testaments’ Finale: Agnes’ Twist Explained, Daisy Parentage Theories, and Season 2 Tease
The first season of “The Testaments” has just finished, and the finale left viewers with a lot of questions. The series is a sequel to “The Handmaid’s Tale” and continues the story set in the world of Gilead. According to Variety, the creators are already working on Season 2, even though production timing is still being figured out.
Showrunner Bruce Miller said in the interview that the writing process is already underway. He explained it in a simple way, saying, “we’re writing the show, we’re breaking the season.” This confirms that Season 2 is not just a plan but actively being developed.
The finale itself focuses on Agnes and Daisy, two young women growing up under strict control in Gilead. Agnes is played by Chase Infiniti and Daisy is played by Lucy Halliday. By the end of the season, both characters are dealing with very different but connected struggles.
They are shown walking through the halls of Aunt Lydia’s school, trying to stay strong while facing a harsh system. Agnes has lost her chance at an arranged marriage and has been pushed back in status. Daisy has also made a risky choice by going undercover again, even though it puts her in danger. Despite everything, they stay united with their friend Shunammite, played by Rowan Blanchard.
Elisabeth Moss spoke about this final moment in the interview. She said, “When I see in that finale, those three girls walking down the hall, I get chills talking about it. It makes me cry every time I watch it. It’s so inspiring, it’s so emotional, it’s so exciting.” Her comments were reported by Variety and reflect how important this scene was for the cast and creators.
Moss also explained that the show tries to balance heavy political ideas with everyday teenage emotions. She said that even in a world like Gilead, the characters still deal with normal feelings, friendships, and fears. That mix is part of what makes the story feel real to the creators.
A big part of the finale also focuses on Agnes and her identity. She has been through major changes in status, going from being seen as a “golden child” to being pushed down and labeled as less valuable. According to Bruce Miller, this shift is important because it shows how quickly power and respect can change in Gilead’s system.

Agnes also makes a major personal sacrifice. She gives up her chance at an elite marriage in order to protect her friend Becka and help others escape danger. This choice puts her in a difficult position, but it also shows her growing independence.
One of the biggest reveals in the season is that Agnes learns a key truth about her mother. She discovers that her mother is June Osborne, a major figure in the resistance, played by Moss. This is a turning point for Agnes, even if she does not fully understand what it means yet.
Bruce Miller explained that this discovery is meant to slowly change her character over time. He said it does not immediately turn her against Gilead, but it starts something inside her that will continue to grow.
Another major topic in the interview was Daisy’s parentage. Fans have been theorizing about who her real parents are, especially after changes from the original book timeline. Miller said that Daisy’s origin story is intentionally complicated and not fully revealed yet.
He explained that part of the reason is creative. The show does not follow the book exactly, because that would not work well for television. Instead, the writers adjusted the story so Agnes and Daisy could share scenes and grow together.
Elisabeth Moss also added that some mysteries are more powerful when shown on screen rather than explained directly. She said, “There are things that come up with making a TV show.” Her point was that sometimes discovery is more emotional than explanation.
The creators also confirmed that June Osborne remains important to the story, but her appearances depend on scheduling and other projects. Miller joked about working around real-world limits while still trying to keep the story strong.
When asked about Season 2 timing, Miller said the team is trying to move forward carefully. He said he does not want to rush the writing process, because the quality of the show is more important than speed. He also mentioned that production timelines depend on studio decisions from MGM, Hulu, and Disney.
The interview also touched on the future of Daisy’s identity and even the possibility of revealing more about her parents and family history later in the series. Miller confirmed that ideas exist, but nothing has been fully revealed yet. Moss also pointed out that the story still has more to explore, including questions about Daisy’s father and family connections.
As Season 1 ends, the show leaves viewers with strong emotional tension and many unanswered questions. According to Variety’s report, Season 2 is already being written, but fans will need to wait for more answers about Agnes, Daisy, and the future of Gilead.
