Elon Musk Takes Another Shot at Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’
Elon Musk has renewed his criticism of Christopher Nolan’s upcoming film The Odyssey, continuing a public debate that has already drawn attention across social media. His latest comments focus on the movie’s casting choices and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ inclusion standards.
The controversy began after Musk reacted to reports about the film’s cast, which includes actors from a range of backgrounds. Nolan’s The Odyssey is a historical epic inspired by Homer’s classic story, and the casting decisions have sparked discussion online about representation in major Hollywood productions.
His criticism intensified after Lupita Nyong’o was confirmed to play Helen of Troy, as well as Clytemnestra. He had previously reacted to early casting rumors but has since revisited and escalated his remarks following the official confirmation.

Musk agreed with comments from conservative commentator Matt Walsh questioning the casting choice and responded with “True,” suggesting support for those views. He also implied that Nolan’s decisions may be influenced by awards requirements, writing that the director “wants the awards.”
In addition, Musk reposted and shared further criticism of the film’s casting, including comments directed at actor Elliot Page, who previously worked with Nolan on Inception. Some of the reshared posts included personal attacks that circulated widely online.
Musk escalated his comments on X, directly linking the film’s casting to Academy Awards eligibility rules. “Who specifically is the asshole who added DEI lies to Academy Awards eligibility instead of it just being about making the best movie?” he wrote.
He later doubled down on his stance, suggesting the director’s decisions were influenced by award requirements. “Chris Nolan desecrated the Odyssey so that he would be eligible for an Academy Award,” Musk posted. These claims did not acknowledge that Nolan’s previous film Oppenheimer, which had a largely white cast, still met eligibility standards and went on to win major awards.

Musk’s remarks followed renewed attention on the film’s casting announcements, including Lupita Nyong’o reportedly joining the project as Helen of Troy. That casting sparked further online debate, with some commentators questioning whether modern representation standards are influencing traditional mythological roles.
The Academy’s Representation and Inclusion Standards, introduced in 2020 and applied from 2024 onward, require films competing for Best Picture to meet at least two of four diversity benchmarks.
These include on-screen representation, creative leadership, crew composition, and audience development initiatives. The Academy states that the rules are designed to encourage broader inclusion in film production.
Musk also engaged with posts criticizing other casting choices, further amplifying discussion around the film on social media. His comments have added to a wider conversation about how modern Hollywood balances creative adaptation, historical storytelling, and evolving industry standards.
The Odyssey is currently scheduled to be released in theaters on July 17. The film is directed by Christopher Nolan and is one of his most anticipated upcoming projects.
