Emily Blunt Admits She Was “A Bit Terrified” Using AI for ‘Disclosure Day’ Alien Voice and Reveals She Made Her Own “Strange Sounds”
Emily Blunt has shared new details about how she created the alien voice for her character in Steven Spielberg’s upcoming sci-fi film Disclosure Day, and she made it clear she was not comfortable relying on artificial intelligence to do the job.
Blunt plays meteorologist Margaret Fairchild in the Universal Pictures film, which is set for release on June 12. In one key scene shown in the trailer, her character begins to produce a strange alien-like clicking sound as she transforms during a tense moment in the story.
Speaking about the process on Hot Ones, Blunt explained that the idea of using AI came up during production, but she quickly rejected it. She said, “There’s various ways you could do it. You could go the AI route, which I’m a bit terrified of.”
Instead of using technology to generate the sound, Blunt decided to build the voice herself using physical performance. She worked closely with the sound team to experiment with different noises and textures.
She described how the scene was filmed in a long continuous take where her character slowly breaks down in front of the camera. According to her, “It’s a four-minute oner that we shot that leads up to that moment, where she’s gradually sort of disintegrating.”
Rather than delivering traditional dialogue, she focused on creating unusual vocal effects in real time on set. She explained, “I thought I could make some real, really strange sounds. So, I said, ‘Maybe I could come in and we’ll just do a range of weird sounds.’ And it’s what we did. I did sort of the clicking sounds. I did sort of humming sounds, consonant sounds, breathing-strange sounds.”
To capture these sounds, the production used a very specific recording setup. Blunt said that microphones were placed in different positions to pick up every detail of her voice and body. She explained, “The sound designer put one microphone by her mouth and another by her throat. It captures it in a really weird way. And then the sound designer went away and created that weird sound.”
Director Steven Spielberg has also spoken publicly about his concerns regarding artificial intelligence in filmmaking. In earlier comments, he made it clear that he does not support replacing human creativity with AI-generated performance. He said, “I’m not willing to substitute, because I don’t really believe in sentience. I don’t believe there is any substitute for the soul. I don’t think that is an algorithm that is inventible.”
He added that while AI can be used as a tool in production, it should never replace human artistic decision-making. He said, “Use AI as a tool, but do not use AI as the final word on anything creative. That’s where I draw the line.”
Disclosure Day follows a cybersecurity whistleblower, played by Josh O’Connor, who tries to expose a global conspiracy tied to alien contact. Blunt’s character becomes part of that escalating crisis as the situation turns increasingly unstable and strange.
The film also features Colin Firth, Eve Hewson, Colman Domingo, and Wyatt Russell, and is positioned as a large-scale sci-fi thriller with a strong focus on human emotion and fear of the unknown.
Blunt’s comments highlight that even in a film dealing with advanced technology and extraterrestrial themes, the creative process behind performance still relied heavily on physical acting, experimentation, and human instinct rather than digital generation.
