Emma D’Arcy & Olivia Cooke Explain ‘House of the Dragon’s’ Jaw-Dropping Episode 2 Finale
House of the Dragon Season 3 Episode 2 ends with one of the most emotional moments of the series so far. After years of friendship, betrayal, and war, Rhaenyra Targaryen and Alicent Hightower come face to face again, but this meeting is nothing like their previous ones. According to comments shared with TheWrap by stars Emma D’Arcy and Olivia Cooke, the final scene marks a major turning point for both characters.
The episode follows Rhaenyra and Daemon as they launch their plan to take back King’s Landing. Their goal is simple. They want to find King Aegon and remove him from power so Rhaenyra can finally claim the Iron Throne.
Things do not go as planned. Aegon has already escaped, and Rhaenyra has no idea where he is. Instead, Daemon discovers Otto Hightower locked away in the castle’s dungeons. Otto, who has played a key role in the conflict since the beginning of the series, suddenly becomes the only high-ranking member of the Green faction left behind.
Rhaenyra makes the difficult decision to execute him herself. The moment is far from triumphant. She is crying as she carries out the execution before finally taking her place on the Iron Throne.
Just moments later, Alicent is brought into the throne room after being stopped while trying to escape the city. She immediately sees her father’s severed head lying on the floor before locking eyes with Rhaenyra.
Speaking to TheWrap, Emma D’Arcy explained what Rhaenyra is feeling in that powerful moment. “I wanted her to be sort of uncomfortably revealed, actually. I think that’s probably what Alicent’s gaze does. She sees through any of the artifice or armor that Rhaenyra might have built up.”

According to D’Arcy, Rhaenyra is no longer able to hide behind the image of a powerful queen. The look from Alicent forces her to confront everything that has happened between them. Despite sitting on the throne she has fought so hard to claim, Rhaenyra cannot escape the emotional weight of what she has just done.
For Alicent, the moment is just as devastating. Olivia Cooke told TheWrap that her character feels completely betrayed after realizing what happened to her father.
“I think she feels incredibly betrayed, and like she was caught up in yet another person’s scheming… it feels like it was all for nothing, and she’s in a worse position than where she started. I don’t know… how that relationship can move on from that, at that point… it’s a huge betrayal.”
Cooke believes the execution changes everything between the two women. Their complicated friendship has survived years of conflict, but seeing Otto’s death may have destroyed any chance of rebuilding that relationship.
Although Rhaenyra has finally reached the Iron Throne, her victory comes with a heavy emotional cost. Instead of celebrating, the new queen is left facing someone who knows her better than almost anyone else. Alicent’s silent reaction says more than words ever could.
Cooke also hinted that the drama is only beginning. She warned viewers that the rest of Season 3 will become even more intense.
“No one’s having a good time, basically, but there’s fantastic new characters and different dynamics with original characters that we see for the first time. It’s huge this season.”
Based on what Emma D’Arcy and Olivia Cooke shared with TheWrap, the final scene of Episode 2 is not simply about Rhaenyra taking the throne. It is about the personal cost of power. The war has pushed both women to places they never imagined, and after Otto’s death, there may be no way back for either of them.
