Emmy Rossum’s ‘Shameless’ Salary Fight Got Shut Down -Until It Became Public
Emmy Rossum has opened up about the long battle she faced while negotiating her salary on Showtime’s hit series Shameless. According to the actress, her push for equal pay did not succeed until details of the private contract dispute leaked to the public in 2016.
Speaking on the Call Her Daddy podcast with host Alex Cooper, Rossum explained that she had spent years trying to get paid fairly for her role as Fiona Gallagher. Once the story became public, fan support quickly grew, and the issue was settled within a day.
“After the first headline or article, I was like what’s going to happen? And the tide really shifted,” Rossum said during the interview. “People seemed to write other articles, like immediately commenting on that, being quite surprised that I wasn’t already being paid equal. And it was resolved within a day.”
When Shameless premiered in 2011, William H. Macy was the bigger name. He played Frank Gallagher, the unreliable father at the center of the family, while Rossum was still building her reputation as a television lead. Before joining the show, she was known for films including The Phantom of the Opera, The Day After Tomorrow, and Mystic River.
Rossum said she understood why Macy earned more money at the beginning because he was the established star. “It made a lot of sense for him to earn a lot more money than me,” she explained.
However, as the show continued, Fiona became one of the most important characters in the series. Rossum’s character carried major storylines, and many viewers considered her one of the main faces of the show alongside Macy.

Rossum first tried to negotiate a higher salary before Season 3. She said her team believed they had strong reasons to ask for more money, including fan support and the character’s growing importance. But the request was rejected.
“We didn’t get it… and that’s fine. We tried and we didn’t get it,” Rossum said.
The actress continued to fight for better pay over the following years. Before Season 8, she and her team pushed again, hoping to receive compensation closer to Macy’s salary. According to Rossum, the request was quickly rejected, creating a difficult situation where she was unsure if she would return to the show.
Then, the private negotiations became public.
Rossum told Alex Cooper that she was surprised when she saw headlines about the dispute online because she never expected a personal contract discussion to become news.
“It’s a private business negotiation, and I never imagined it would become public,” she said. “Not just for the public, but for the cast and crew.”
The public reaction changed the situation almost immediately. After years of negotiations, Rossum finally received the equal pay agreement she had been fighting for.
William H. Macy also publicly supported Rossum during the dispute. Speaking to TMZ at the time, Macy said it was “about fucking time” she received fair compensation and added that she worked just as hard as he did.
Later, at Vulture Fest in 2017, Macy continued to defend Rossum’s position, saying it was obvious that Fiona was central to the show.
“Who’s the center of the show? It’s Fiona. Of course she should get paid,” Macy said.
Rossum stayed with Shameless until Season 9 before leaving the series. She explained that her exit was not because of anger over the salary dispute. Instead, she wanted to focus on producing, developing new projects, and taking more control over her career.
Looking back, Rossum said the fight was never only about money. It was about recognition and being valued for the work she was doing.
Do you think Emmy Rossum was right to fight for equal pay on Shameless?
“It was really about being valued equally when I was doing equal work,” Rossum said. “For me, it was as simple as that.”
