‘Eternally Yours’ Episode 3 Recap & Ending Explained: Liz’s Bloody Secret About Jesse Comes Out
Few sitcoms can turn a welcome party into a crisis, but ‘Eternally Yours‘ does it with a straight face and a fountain of blood. This ‘Eternally Yours’ recap and ending explained digs into the CBS comedy’s latest half hour, which finally pulls back the curtain on one of the coven’s oldest members. It’s a funny, fanged hour with a surprisingly tender core.
The series comes from the ‘Ghosts’ creators Joe Port and Joe Wiseman and follows vampire couple Charles (Ed Weeks) and Liz (Allegra Edwards), whose romance has gone stale after 500 years. The pilot ended with their daughter Emma’s human boyfriend, Max (Jaren Lewison), being turned into a vampire, which changed the entire premise of the show. Before the season even began, the creators had teased that Jesse’s idea of how he became a vampire wouldn’t be the real story.
That promise gets paid off in “The Mistake,” where the coven throws an initiation party for Max and invites prominent members of the vampire community. One of them is a troublemaker with history, and the guest list quickly turns into a minefield.
Jeff Hiller guest stars as Aldrict, who arrives as the cousin of Drusilla. When he looks at Liz and asks whether they’ve met, she insists no, with a look of apparent dread. That panic hints that something is buried in her past, and Aldrict keeps rattling off possible places they could have crossed paths.
At the same time, Jesse (Parker Young) has been showing how grateful he is to Liz and Charles for choosing him and making him part of their coven in 1876. The show uses a flashback to explore his origins, raising him from a lowly farmhand to a powerful member of the undead.
The twist is that Jesse was never meant to be turned. Liz had been a vampire for hundreds of years without ever hunting, because it scared her and Charles did it for her. She needed to overcome that fear, so she picked Jesse as her first kill because he had no family and wouldn’t be missed.
But she didn’t drain enough blood, so instead of killing him she turned him. She never told him the truth, which is why the episode is titled “The Mistake.”
Aldrict eventually remembers Liz, and she confides to Max that he knows the secret. Max, meanwhile, has newly discovered telepathy that he can’t control, which means his thoughts get shared with the whole room. He tries hard not to think about Jesse being a mistake, and of course that makes him nervously broadcast it to everyone.
Jesse starts to believe the family was never real and that Liz and Charles were pretending so he wouldn’t find out. But Liz did grow to love him and can’t imagine her family without him. She just doesn’t know how to earn his forgiveness.

The solution is simple and sweet. Jesse never got a proper vampire welcome party, so Liz suggests a double party with Max, officially welcoming him and acknowledging him as family out loud. Max happily shares, and Jesse earns the nickname “Jesse the Iceman” thanks to his love of blocks of ice and ‘Top Gun.’
Then the crisis hits. Phyllis (Rose Abdoo) returns early from her spa weekend and has bubonic plague, thanks to Max blowing dust from one of Charles’ old vampire books. She’s coughing up blood, so Charles has to end the party swiftly to protect her. In doing so, he also defends Liz, proving that his relationship with her isn’t as dead as it looked.

Emma (Helen J. Shen) also deals with her fears this week, because it’s not easy to know she’ll spend eternity with a boy she has known for 6 weeks. She has a habit of running away and breaking hearts. By the end of the episode she acknowledges that she’s Max’s girlfriend, and the pair move forward.
That leaves the coven closer than ever, though Aldrict looks like a troublemaker who isn’t done yet. The Halloween-themed next episode brings new danger, with the coven fearing a werewolf attack.
Can Jesse forgive Liz after learning the truth about how he became a vampire?
