Everything Fans Need To Know About ‘Dutton Ranch’ Season 2, the ‘Yellowstone’ Spinoff’s Next Chapter
‘Dutton Ranch‘ just wrapped up a wild first season, and Paramount+ is already saddling up for more. The Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser led drama scored a season two renewal before its debut season even finished airing, and the news has sent ‘Yellowstone’ fans into a frenzy of speculation about what comes next for Beth and Rip.
Between a surprising showrunner shakeup, record breaking viewership, and a finale that left plenty of loose ends in Rio Paloma, there is a lot to unpack. Here is everything currently known about ‘Dutton Ranch’ season two.
‘Dutton Ranch’ Season 2 Renewal Details
Paramount+ officially renewed ‘Dutton Ranch’ for a second season on June 24, and the announcement came before the first season had even reached its finale. The renewal followed the retitling of the project earlier that year, when the series shed its longer working title and became simply ‘Dutton Ranch’.
The decision was not exactly a shock given the numbers. Paramount reported that the show attracted 12.9 million viewers globally during its first week, making it the biggest original series premiere in Paramount+ history, and it also landed the number one spot on the Nielsen streaming charts for the week of May 11.
Paramount+ Head of Originals Jane Wiseman celebrated the milestone in a statement, calling Beth and Rip among the most iconic duos in television history and expressing excitement about bringing a whole new world to life for subscribers around the globe. Matt Thunell, President of Paramount Television Studios, echoed that sentiment, noting the show built on the legacy of beloved characters while carving out its own identity.
Showrunner Change for Season 2
Just days after the renewal, Paramount confirmed a significant behind the scenes shift. Benjamin Cavell has joined ‘Dutton Ranch’ as showrunner for the second season, taking over from original creator Chad Feehan.
Feehan’s departure had actually happened earlier than most fans realized. He stepped away from the project before the series even premiered, reportedly due to friction between him, cast members, Taylor Sheridan, and 101 Studios head David C. Glasser. The exact details of that fallout have never been fully explained.
Cavell brings a resume that should reassure worried fans. He previously worked on shows including Justified, SEAL Team, and The Stand, and he is also the creator of the Stephen King adaptation The Institute.
Reilly and Hauser addressed the transition directly in an interview with the Hollywood Reporter, with Hauser noting that showrunners change all the time. Reilly added that the cast finished season one beautifully with Feehan and called the experience difficult but satisfying, the way anything worth making tends to be.
What We Know About the ‘Dutton Ranch’ Season 2 Plot
Season one followed Beth and Rip as they left Montana behind to build a new life on a Texas ranch, only to collide with the Jackson family and their sprawling 10 Petal Ranch empire. The series is set and filmed in the fictional South Texas city of Rio Paloma, a major departure from the Montana backdrop that defined ‘Yellowstone’.
Things escalated quickly heading into the finale stretch. During the June 19 episode, Rob-Will crashed a celebration for the 10 Petal Ranch’s 190th birthday and demanded that Beulah name him the next owner over Joaquin, a shocking announcement that sent Joaquin storming out with a vow of revenge.

Jai Courtney, who plays the volatile Rob-Will, offered some insight into his character heading into whatever comes next. Courtney told ‘TVLine’ that Rob-Will is someone you would be a fool to underestimate, adding that despite his substance struggles and other issues, he should not be discounted just because he was introduced as messy.
As for the bigger picture, Reilly has hinted that the writers already have a direction mapped out. She told the ‘Hollywood Reporter’ that they have some ideas about season two based on where they left season one, and while she could not discuss the ending, she teased that the team is excited about where the story goes and already knows how it begins.
‘Dutton Ranch’ Cast Set to Return
The core trio anchoring the show is expected back for round two. The series stars Annette Bening as Beulah Jackson, the iron fisted owner of the 10 Petal Ranch, Ed Harris as Everett McKinney, a veteran turned veterinarian with a romantic history with Beulah, Finn Little as Carter, Beth and Rip’s adopted son, and Natalie Alyn Lind as Oreana Jackson, Beulah’s granddaughter and Carter’s love interest.
Rounding out the ensemble are several other key players. Jai Courtney plays Rob-Will Jackson, Beulah’s power hungry son, Juan Pablo Raba plays Joaquin Jackson Reyes, Beulah’s adopted son and family fixer, and J.R. Villarreal plays Azul Ramos.
Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser remain the beating heart of the series, and their off screen roles are expanding too. Both actors will continue to serve as executive producers on top of reprising their starring roles as Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler.
Interestingly, this is not the only corner of the Sheridan universe currently thriving. ‘Dutton Ranch’ is actually the second spinoff to emerge from ‘Yellowstone’, following Marshals, which follows Luke Grimes as Kayce Dutton leading U.S. Marshals in Montana. Reilly has even teased the possibility of a crossover between the two shows somewhere down the line, though nothing has been confirmed yet.
With a new showrunner steering the ship and a rivalry with the Jackson family far from resolved, ‘Dutton Ranch’ season two has a lot riding on it. What do you want to see happen between Beth, Rip, and the Jacksons once the new season finally saddles up?
