Horror fans have spent months dissecting every frame of ‘Obsession‘ since the supernatural thriller turned into one of the biggest surprise hits of the year.

The film follows a music store employee named Bear who makes a careless wish that his crush will love him more than anything in the world, only to watch that wish spiral into something far darker. With a tiny budget and two largely unknown leads, nobody expected the project to become a cultural moment.

Much of that conversation has centered on the bond between stars Michael Johnston and Inde Navarrette, who play Bear and Nikki Freeman. Their performances have been credited as the emotional engine that makes the film work, with critics and audiences alike praising the strange, lived in energy between the two characters. That energy, it turns out, was not something that came naturally right away.

A newly shared clip from the film’s casting process is now circulating online, offering fans a first look at the chemistry test that ultimately sealed the deal for both actors. The footage shows Johnston and Navarrette running through a tense early scene together, with Navarrette seated and Johnston standing over her mid-conversation. The short clip quickly racked up hundreds of thousands of views as fans got their first glimpse of the audition that started it all.

According to reporting from The Hollywood Reporter, director Curry Barker struggled to find the right actor to play Bear before casting director Skyler Zurn remembered Johnston from previous auditions and pulled old tape to show the filmmaker. Barker then brought Johnston in to read opposite the actresses competing for the role of Nikki, and once Johnston and Navarrette read together, the decision became obvious.

Interestingly, the chemistry that landed both actors the roles was not exactly the warm, easy kind audiences might expect. According to TV Tropes, the pair barely knew each other before filming began, with an early in person meeting that included an awkward over the top handshake attempt from Navarrette and an unsure reaction from Johnston. Rather than hurting their dynamic, that mismatched energy ended up shaping the believably sibling like, almost reluctant chemistry the characters share in ‘Obsession’.

Navarrette later opened up about just how nerve wracking the audition process actually was for her. She described the process as so crazy, explaining that she sent in a tape, was liked, then went in for a Zoom read that she felt was awful because her body was not reacting the way she wanted it to. She added that the chemistry read was her third and final opportunity to prove herself, and she told the outlet that she went in determined to give everything she had and left feeling proud of what she accomplished.

That commitment paid off in a way few could have predicted. Per Box Office Mojo figures cited by Parade, ‘Obsession’ has grossed roughly 339 million dollars worldwide against a reported production budget of just 750,000 dollars, numbers that have stunned even longtime industry observers.

Both actors reflected on that very chemistry read as one of the moments that made them realize they were part of something special. Navarrette recalled the pairing working specifically because it captured a believable lack of chemistry between two characters who are not supposed to end up together, while Johnston agreed that everyone watching could sense the scene was landing exactly as intended.

Critics have since pointed to that dynamic as central to why ‘Obsession’ resonates so strongly. Reviews highlighted Navarrette’s performance in particular, with several outlets noting how her work elevated Nikki from a simple horror antagonist into a more tragic and human figure. Johnston’s portrayal of Bear, a character who is simultaneously the protagonist and the architect of his own downfall, has also drawn praise for grounding the film’s more outlandish supernatural elements.

For a project that began as a low-budget passion piece shot in Los Angeles, the road to this kind of cultural footprint has been remarkable. The newly surfaced chemistry test footage gives fans a rare window into the exact moment that dynamic first came together on camera, long before anyone knew how far ‘Obsession’ would go.
