Fewer Actors Are Chasing Marvel Roles, Says Top Hollywood Agent

Fewer actors are chasing Marvel roles than they were five years ago, according to a top Hollywood agent.

“Joining the MCU is still a crazy, life-changing opportunity,” the agent said, “but I don’t have as many clients asking to do one as they were five years ago.”

The shift comes as Marvel has faced challenges at the box office. This year, three of its films failed to reach the performance of previous releases and made only modest profits, not including marketing costs.

In addition, the studio’s push to release many Disney+ shows in the early 2020s has left audiences feeling oversaturated. The result is that standalone Marvel movies no longer feel essential to fans, which affects their appeal.

One executive explained, “The standalone movies are in trouble, because you feel like you can miss it now.”

Marvel is adjusting its strategy to focus on bigger events. The two upcoming Avengers movies are expected to perform well, described by an executive as “bulletproof.” Still, the overall earning potential for MCU films has decreased. “Any movie could be huge, but nothing is close to a guarantee,” said one director.

For actors, the combination of franchise fatigue and lower box-office certainty has made Marvel roles less irresistible than they once were. Agents report that while the chance to join the MCU is still valuable, fewer stars see it as the must-do opportunity it used to be.

It makes sense that actors are thinking twice about Marvel projects. With the market oversaturated and profits no longer guaranteed, the excitement has cooled. I think Marvel can bounce back, but the days of guaranteed blockbuster stardom for every MCU role may be over.
