Finished ‘The Crash’ on Netflix? These Hulu Shows Explore the Real Mackenzie Shirilla Case

With Netflix’s ‘The Crash’ dominating the true crime conversation since its May premiere, many viewers are now turning to Hulu to fill in the gaps, and what they are finding paints a far more damning picture of Mackenzie Shirilla than the streaming giant’s feature ever did.

‘The Crash’ arrived on Netflix on May 15 and centers on Shirilla’s murder conviction in connection with the deaths of her boyfriend, Dominic Russo, and friend Davion Flanagan. The documentary notably featured Shirilla’s first on-camera interview since her trial. Director Gareth Johnson and producer Angharad Scott described the interview as unprecedented, given that Shirilla had never spoken to police before or after her arrest.

Hulu’s ‘Mean Girl Murders,’ however, covers ground that Netflix never touched. The season two episode titled ‘Under the Influence’ speaks to several of Shirilla’s classmates and paints a portrait of her ambition to become a social media influencer, with classmate Jaina Maynard stating she had nearly come to blows with Shirilla on multiple occasions due to her bullying behavior.

In ‘Mean Girl Murders,’ investigators described Shirilla driving the crash route beforehand as a “dry run.” When police examined her phone, GPS data placed her at the same intersection as the accident just three days before the crash, with authorities stating she had no discernible reason for being there. These details, largely absent from the Netflix film, have fueled heated debate online about whether the full scope of the case was ever properly presented to the public.

The Hulu episode also revealed that Shirilla allegedly kept a written list of people she disliked and what she wanted to do to them, a detail her classmates recounted directly. Former friend Rachel Anderson alleged that Shirilla “wanted to be at the top,” adding that Shirilla was someone who always got what she wanted and was never punished, until now.

Also available on Hulu, the ‘Killer Cases’ episode titled ‘Murder on Wheels’ offers yet another layer of context, particularly around Davion Flanagan’s backstory and how the crash affected his family. The episode also includes footage from a police interview with Shirilla’s former boyfriend, Tyler Proctor, who claimed he personally believed she was attempting to take her own life during the crash.

Shirilla was convicted in 2023 on two counts of murder after prosecutors argued she intentionally accelerated to 100 miles per hour and never applied the brakes. She is currently serving two concurrent sentences of 15 years to life. Her first appeal was denied, and her family has vowed to continue fighting the conviction.

Viewer reaction online has leaned heavily in favor of the Hulu content, with one widely circulated Reddit comment declaring that the Netflix documentary failed to cover the full picture of how deliberate the crash may have been, and encouraging others to seek out ‘Mean Girl Murders’ and ‘Killer Cases’ on Hulu for a more complete account

. For true crime audiences who felt ‘The Crash’ raised more questions than it answered, Hulu appears to be where those answers are waiting.
