First Look at ‘Rogue Trooper: The Animated Movie’ Made in Unreal Engine 5

Director Duncan Jones is returning to science fiction with an animated version of Rogue Trooper, based on the cult comic series from 2000 AD. Known for Moon and Source Code, Jones is now using Unreal Engine 5 to bring this unique world to the big screen in a new way.
The film follows Rogue, a genetically engineered soldier built to survive on a planet full of toxic air and endless war. He’s the only survivor of a deadly mission and is on a path of revenge. Along the way, he’s joined by three AI companions, a gun, a backpack, and a helmet — each carrying the minds of his fallen comrades.
Aneurin Barnard voices Rogue. The cast also includes Hayley Atwell, Jack Lowden, Sean Bean, Daryl McCormack, Reece Shearsmith, Diane Morgan, Asa Butterfield, and Alice Lowe. Jemaine Clement and Matt Berry bring their voices to two strange, comic villains named Mr. Brass and Mr. Bland.
The film is produced by Rebellion and Liberty Films. It uses real-time facial capture to animate the characters, especially for actors like Clement and Berry. This technique helps create detailed expressions and more lifelike digital performances.
Jones has been developing the film for several years. He first shared his plans in 2018. At one point, a different version of Rogue Trooper was being written by comic book writer Grant Morrison, and a short fan film had also been made. But Jones’ version became the official project, and by early 2024, animation was completed.
Rogue Trooper takes place on a planet called Nu Earth, where two armies — the Norts and the Southers, are locked in a brutal war. The planet’s environment is deadly, and only soldiers like Rogue can survive it. The film’s visuals, built entirely in Unreal Engine 5, bring this dark, strange world to life with bold colors and huge sci-fi landscapes.
According to the official synopsis, “he finds himself the sole survivor of an invasion force.” This loss sets the stage for a mission filled with action and a search for justice.
The movie looks to mix sci-fi action with surreal visuals and some dark humor. With a big voice cast and advanced animation, it could become a standout in the world of animated films.
From what’s been shown so far, this looks like one of Jones’ most ambitious projects. Fans of the comic will likely enjoy seeing these characters come to life in a new format, and newcomers may be drawn in by the visuals and cast.
In my view, Rogue Trooper could be a refreshing change in the world of animated films. It’s got a strong team behind it and a weird, exciting story that hasn’t been done to death. Hopefully, the final result lives up to the promise of this first look.
