Focus Features Just Revealed the Full Scope of Its ‘Obsession’ Oscar Campaign, and It’s Massive
Horror films have long struggled to break through with Academy voters, often left fighting for scraps in the technical categories even when audiences clearly respond to them. That dynamic has been shifting lately, with genre films finally starting to earn the kind of prestige-tier campaigns typically reserved for awards-season dramas.
‘Obsession‘ looks poised to become the latest test case for that shift. The low-budget horror-romance from writer-director Curry Barker became the highest-grossing original film of the decade, pulling in more than $505 million worldwide on a production budget of just $750,000, a return that’s impossible for studios to ignore heading into awards season.
That box office success is now translating into a genuinely sprawling campaign. Curry Barker’s ‘Obsession’ will receive a major awards push from Focus Features spanning fourteen categories, including Best Picture, Best Director for Barker, and Best Actress for breakout star Inde Navarrette, according to Variety.
The full scope of Focus Features’ push is notably comprehensive. Beyond the top-line Picture and Director nominations, the studio is campaigning Michael Johnson for Best Actor, along with a trio of supporting performances from Cooper Tomlinson, Megan Lawless, and Andy Richter. Barker himself is positioned as a genuine triple threat, also receiving pushes in Original Screenplay and Film Editing, mirroring the same three-category sweep Sean Baker achieved with his Best Picture winner ‘Anora.’
The below-the-line categories are just as extensive, with cinematographer Taylor Clemons, composer Rock Burwell, casting director Skyler Zurn, and production designer Vivian Gray all receiving individual pushes. Rounding out the list are sound mixers YJ Gold and Ben Zarai and makeup and hair department head Allie Shehorn, giving ‘Obsession’ a genuinely full-spectrum campaign rather than one narrowly focused on a single acting nomination.

Navarrette’s inclusion in the Best Actress race carries particular weight given how quickly her career has shifted. Less than a year ago, she was primarily known for a smaller supporting role on The CW’s ‘Superman & Lois,’ and her turn as Nikki in ‘Obsession’ has become the film’s emotional and critical centerpiece, praised for balancing menace and vulnerability within a single performance.
Placing her in the lead actress category rather than supporting is itself a strategic gamble, since studios sometimes steer performers toward less crowded categories to improve their odds. Given how central her role is to the film’s success, though, Focus Features clearly believes the risk is worth taking.
The sheer breadth of this campaign echoes a strategy Focus Features and other studios have leaned on before, following the model Jordan Peele’s ‘Get Out’ used back in 2017, when the horror-comedy competed across multiple categories and ultimately landed four Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, along with a win for Best Original Screenplay. Whether ‘Obsession’ can replicate that same crossover success remains to be seen, but the scale of this campaign suggests Focus Features isn’t treating it as a long shot.
With Barker positioned as a rare multi-category contender and Navarrette entering a Best Actress field that industry observers have described as relatively thin this year, ‘Obsession’ has real momentum heading into the coming awards season.
