The superhero satire that changed the game on streaming is no longer a one-show operation. Since its 2019 debut, ‘The Boys’ has quietly built one of the most ambitious franchise expansions on Prime Video, spinning its blood-soaked universe into animated anthologies, college-set dramas, and now a full-blown 1950s period prequel with a stacked cast to match.

The main series premiered its first season of eight episodes on July 26, 2019, and has since run through five seasons, with the fifth and final season premiering on April 8, 2026. With the mothership approaching its conclusion, all eyes are turning to what comes next. Here is every spin-off and prequel in the franchise, broken down from the beginning.

The Animated Anthology That Kicked Off the Expanded Universe

Before any live-action spin-off could get off the ground, the franchise took its first major step sideways with an animated series. At the 2021 CCXP Worlds panel for Prime Video in Brazil, the animated anthology ‘The Boys Presents: Diabolical’ was announced and likened by executive producers Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg to ‘The Animatrix’. The comparison was ambitious, and the show largely delivered on it.

‘Diabolical’ is made up of eight brand new stories created by contributors including Awkwafina, Garth Ennis, Eliot Glazer and Ilana Glazer, Evan Goldberg and Seth Rogen, Andy Samberg, and Aisha Tyler, with each episode featuring a different animation style. The results were unpredictable, wild, and often genuinely funny.

The animated anthology series released eight episodes in 2022, which were met with critical acclaim and a 97% critical score on Rotten Tomatoes. Not all of ‘Diabolical’s’ episodes are considered canon, though an exception is the finale, which explores Homelander’s early days with the Seven and his relationship with Black Noir.

Despite the warm critical reception, the show hit a wall when it came to renewal. While speaking with TheWrap, creator Eric Kripke revealed that there probably will not be a second season of ‘Diabolical’, as there was not enough viewership to warrant a continuation. For now, the anthology stands as a one-season curiosity and a bold early experiment in expanding this universe.

‘Gen V’ and the Rise and Fall of Godolkin University

The franchise’s first live-action spin-off was a genuine swing. ‘Gen V’ stars Jaz Sinclair, Chance Perdomo, Lizze Broadway, Maddie Phillips, London Thor, Derek Luh, and Asa Germann, centered around the franchise’s young adult Supes. Set at the fictional Godolkin University, it introduced a new generation of characters navigating powers, politics, and very dark institutional secrets.

The first season of ‘Gen V’ premiered on September 29, 2023, with the second season following on September 17, 2025. The college-set drama earned praise for deepening the franchise’s lore and connecting meaningfully with the events of the main series, finding its own voice within the larger ‘Boys’ world.

Before the release of ‘The Boys’ season 4, ‘Gen V’ season 2’s filming was slightly delayed due to the tragic demise of Chance Perdomo, who played Andre in the spin-off series’ season 1. Filming eventually ensued in May 2024, with the producers confirming that Perdomo would not be recast. One of the more intriguing additions to the second season was Hamish Linklater as Godolkin University’s new dean, Cipher.

However, the numbers ultimately decided the fate of the series. The ‘Gen V’ season 2 finale failed to chart on Nielsen, and on April 24, 2026, the cancellation was confirmed. Kripke and Goldberg promised fans that the characters would live on, stating they are committed to continuing their stories in ‘The Boys’ season 5 and other franchise projects going forward.

‘Vought Rising’ and the Prequel Set in the 1950s

If ‘Gen V’ was about the future of the franchise, ‘Vought Rising’ is firmly about its past. The prequel series was first announced during San Diego Comic-Con 2024, with Jensen Ackles and Aya Cash set to lead the show, reprising their roles as Soldier Boy and Stormfront respectively. The announcement immediately generated enormous buzz among the franchise’s fanbase.

Eric Kripke and showrunner Paul Grellong described ‘Vought Rising’ to fans at Comic-Con 2024 as a twisted murder mystery about the origins of Vought in the 1950s, the early exploits of Soldier Boy, and the diabolical maneuvers of a Supe known to fans as Stormfront, who was then going by the name Clara Vought. The period setting opens up a side of this universe that the main series has only ever hinted at.

Production began in August 2025, with Mason Dye, Elizabeth Posey, and Will Hochman joining the cast as series regulars, alongside a growing ensemble that would later include Cecily Strong, Mark Pellegrino, Eric Johnson, and others in recurring roles. The casting announcements kept coming well into early 2026, signaling that Amazon is treating this as a major production.

‘Vought Rising’ is expected to premiere on Amazon Prime Video in 2027, and will serve as the fourth series in ‘The Boys‘ franchise. Kripke has also mentioned that characters from other series in the franchise could appear in potential future seasons. For a universe currently losing one of its key pillars with ‘Gen V’ gone, this prequel carries significant weight.

‘The Boys: Mexico’ and the International Frontier

The most geographically adventurous entry in the franchise is still very much finding its footing, but the talent attached to it is impossible to ignore. ‘The Boys: Mexico’ was developed with Diego Luna and Gael García Bernal set to executive produce, and potentially appear in minor roles, with Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer, writer of the superhero film ‘Blue Beetle’, attached to write and executive produce the new series.

The new series will be shot on location in Mexico, and beyond its Latin American setting, the story remains a mystery. The prospect of seeing how Vought’s corporate grip operates in a completely different cultural context is a genuinely exciting premise that the main series has never had the chance to explore.

Reports indicate the series will be a Spanish-language program, with Eric Kripke stating he is hopeful the project gets made, though it is still in the pilot script stage as of mid-2025. It is the most uncertain entry on this list, but the creative pedigree behind it gives reason for optimism.

The Boys franchise is now at an absolutely critical juncture, with its main audience draw about to end and the franchise needing to prove it can stand on its own without the central storyline that has been holding it all together. With ‘Vought Rising’ heading into 2027 and ‘The Boys: Mexico’ still in development, the next chapter of this universe is far from written. Whether you think Soldier Boy can carry a prequel on his own shoulders or you are holding out hope for ‘The Boys: Mexico’ to become the franchise’s unexpected breakout, feel free to share which of these spin-offs you are most, or least, excited about.
