George Lucas Says AI Will Make Filmmaking “Much Easier” as He Embraces the Future of Movies
George Lucas has never been afraid of new technology. From creating groundbreaking visual effects for Star Wars to helping push digital filmmaking forward, the legendary filmmaker has spent much of his career finding new ways to change how movies are made. Now, as Hollywood debates the future of artificial intelligence, Lucas believes AI could become another important tool for filmmakers.
In a rare interview, Lucas spoke about AI while discussing his career, technology and the upcoming Lucas Museum of Narrative Art. The Star Wars creator said he sees artificial intelligence as a natural step in the evolution of filmmaking rather than something that should be feared.
Lucas explained that AI could make the process of creating movies much easier for filmmakers. “Artificial intelligence means it’s much easier for us to make movies,” he said, comparing the rise of AI to the transition from older technology to modern inventions.
The filmmaker compared concerns about AI to people who resisted the move from horses and carriages to automobiles. Lucas said that while new technology always creates worries, progress cannot simply be stopped.
“It’s very much like sitting here saying, ‘Well, I believe the horse and the buggy is really where it’s at. These cars, they break down, they need gas, there’s all kinds of problems with them,’” Lucas explained. He added that despite the problems people see with new technology, “there’s nothing you can do about it. That’s progress, it’s the future.”
While Lucas is optimistic about AI, he also acknowledged that the technology comes with challenges. One of the biggest concerns in Hollywood is the use of AI to create fake images, videos and performances without proper credit or permission.
Lucas believes AI could actually help solve some of those problems. He argued that the same technology being used to create fake content could also be used to identify it.
“If you want AI that tells you when something is fake and where it came from, AI can do that,” Lucas said. He added that humans alone may not be able to keep up with the amount of fake content being created.

The filmmaker also stressed that people should remain responsible for how they use the technology. According to Lucas, AI itself is not the problem, but rather how individuals choose to use it.
“The whole idea is you’re a human being, you’re responsible for what you say and what you do,” Lucas said. He compared the situation to real-world actions, saying people should be held accountable when they misuse technology.
Lucas’ views on AI are similar to his long history of embracing changes in filmmaking. He helped create Industrial Light & Magic, which transformed visual effects, and later supported digital tools that changed how movies are produced.
For Lucas, technology is simply another way to tell stories. He believes the heart of filmmaking will always come from human creativity and emotion, even as new tools continue to change the process.
“It’s not a technology, it’s an idea,” Lucas said when discussing cinema and innovation.
While many filmmakers remain cautious about AI, Lucas sees it as an opportunity rather than a threat. For someone who built a career by imagining the future, the Star Wars creator believes artificial intelligence could be the next major step in how stories come to life.
