Godzilla x Kong: Supernova may be shaping up to be a big step forward for the MonsterVerse.

According to reports from test screenings, the upcoming movie is being described as an overall improvement over the previous Godzilla and Kong films. The early reactions reportedly point to a movie that mixes the darker, more serious feel of Godzilla: King of the Monsters with the faster and more crowd-friendly style of Godzilla vs. Kong.

The test screening reports have naturally caught the attention of MonsterVerse fans, especially after Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire took the franchise in a much lighter and more colorful direction. While that movie was a major box office success, reactions to its tone and human characters were more mixed.

Supernova appears to be trying to find a balance between the different styles that have defined the franchise.

The movie is directed by Grant Sputore and is the sixth film in Legendary’s MonsterVerse. It follows Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire and is currently scheduled to arrive in theaters on March 26, 2027.

The reported test screening reactions are particularly interesting because they suggest the new movie could bring back some of the atmosphere that fans enjoyed in earlier MonsterVerse films. King of the Monsters was known for its huge monster battles, darker tone and dramatic presentation, while Godzilla vs. Kong focused more heavily on spectacle and entertainment.

According to the screening reports, Supernova takes elements from both approaches rather than simply repeating what came before.

The film also has a new director behind the camera. Adam Wingard, who directed both Godzilla vs. Kong and The New Empire, did not return because of scheduling issues. Sputore was later hired to take over the next chapter.

The cast includes Kaitlyn Dever, Jack O’Connell, Alycia Debnam-Carey, Delroy Lindo, Matthew Modine and Sam Neill. Dan Stevens is also returning as Trapper from The New Empire.

Delroy Lindo has previously suggested that the human characters will receive more attention this time around. Speaking about the movie, Lindo said the human side needs to be “as humanly relatable as possible” and that “the human element also has to be compelling for audiences.”

That could be important for Supernova. One of the most common complaints about some MonsterVerse movies has been the human storyline, with audiences often caring far more about Godzilla and Kong than the people surrounding them.

There is also plenty of mystery surrounding the movie itself. The title Supernova sparked speculation about the possible appearance of SpaceGodzilla or other major monsters. Earlier production information also indicated that SpaceGodzilla is connected to the film.

However, the biggest takeaway from the reported test screenings is the apparent improvement in tone and overall quality. The reports are not official reviews, and test screenings can change significantly before a movie reaches theaters. Still, the early word could be encouraging for fans who have been hoping for a stronger balance between monster action, story and character development.

For now, MonsterVerse fans will have to wait for more official footage and information. If the test screening reactions are accurate, though, Godzilla x Kong: Supernova could be aiming to deliver a more satisfying mix of the best elements from the franchise’s previous movies.

Are you excited for Godzilla x Kong: Supernova after these reported test screening reactions?
