Harlan Coben Finally Explains the Wildest Twist in Netflix’s ‘I Will Find You’
Harlan Coben is known for creating mystery stories filled with shocking reveals, and his latest thriller, “I Will Find You,” follows the same formula. The Netflix series is packed with secrets, hidden identities, and unexpected turns, but one twist in particular changed everything for viewers.
In a video shared by Netflix, Coben opened up about the biggest surprise in the story and explained why the reveal worked so well. According to the author, a great twist comes from building expectations and then completely changing what the audience believes.
“I Will Find You hopefully, has a few big twists and turns at the end. What makes a good twist, of course, is you play with expectations,” Coben said.
The biggest reveal involves Hayden, played by Milo Ventimiglia. Throughout the story, viewers are led to believe that Hayden is helping the main character, but the truth is much darker. Coben explained that Hayden was actually the person behind the entire plan.

“The biggest one is that Hayden, played by Milo Ventimiglia, is the bad guy behind it all. He had his reasons, and I hope you kind of understand them,” Coben explained.
The author also praised Ventimiglia’s performance, saying the actor’s popularity helped make the twist even more effective. Known for roles where audiences often see him as a trustworthy figure, Ventimiglia was able to surprise viewers by playing against expectations.
“Everybody loves Milo Ventimiglia. And so to play against that type and to work it and to have him be seemingly part of the team, and then at the very end to be able to pull that rug from under your feet,” Coben said.
The story follows David Burroughs, a man serving a life sentence after being blamed for the murder of his young son Matthew. David believes his child was killed years earlier, but everything changes when he discovers a photograph that appears to show Matthew is still alive.
From there, the mystery begins to unravel. The first major secret is that the child David found dead was never actually Matthew. The body was an unrelated child who had been brought into the situation as part of a carefully planned setup. The victim was an orphan from Switzerland who matched Matthew’s age and appearance, allowing the people behind the scheme to create a false story.
The plan also involved fake evidence and manipulated records, making it appear that David was responsible for his own son’s death. With money and influence, the people involved were able to convince authorities and destroy David’s life.
The mastermind behind everything was Hayden Payne, a wealthy man whose obsession with Rachel, David’s sister-in-law, pushed him into an extreme plan. Hayden believed Matthew was his biological son because of a secret connected to a fertility clinic. After discovering Rachel’s name connected to the clinic, he manipulated the situation and convinced himself that he had a connection to the child.
However, Coben saved one final surprise for the ending. The truth is that Matthew was actually David’s biological son all along. Hayden’s entire plan was based on a false belief, meaning he destroyed multiple lives for a child who was never his.
For Coben, the success of the twist came from careful storytelling and strong performances. He credited Milo Ventimiglia and the writing team for making Hayden’s transformation believable and impactful.
“That I credit Milo Ventimiglia and the writer for being able to pull that off in the end,” Coben said.
With “I Will Find You,” Coben once again delivers the kind of mystery that keeps audiences guessing until the final moments, proving why he remains one of the biggest names in modern thriller storytelling.
