Here’s When & Where Miles Morales Was Born

Peter Parker was the only Spider-Man in the main Marvel Universe for many years. There were some variants from other earths, but none hit the popularity that Peter Parker ever did. That was until 2011 when Brian Michael Bendis created Miles Morales. Miles was a fresh, brand new character who picked up the mantle of Spider-Man after the death of his universe’s Peter Parker. Ever since his debut, the character has only grown in popularity and has now appeared in movies, games, and TV shows. You may be wondering to yourself what Mile’s origin was and where he was born. That’s where we come in. So, when and where was Miles Morales born?

Miles Morales was born in Brooklyn, New York, on Earth 1610. For those who do not know, Earth 1610 was the Ultimate Universe of Marvel Comics. He is of African-American and Puerto Rican descent, and his Afro-Latino roots are a major character element. He is from a working-class home in Brooklyn and attends Visions Academy.

Who is Miles’s family?

Miles Morales is one of the few superheroes in comics to have parents who are alive and know of his alter ego. His father is a police officer, and his mother is a nurse, which is where Miles gets his need to help people. However, though it seems like Miles has a happy family life, his uncle Aaron is the supervillain, the Prowler.

Miles and his uncle used to be really close, but this ended up causing a rift between the two characters. Aaron wanted Miles to follow in his footsteps and become a villain, but Miles refused, which caused them to be on and off again enemies. This was changed for ‘Into the Spider-Verse,’ which had a simpler story between the two.

What is the Ultimate Universe?

Marvel’s Ultimate Comics was established in the early 2000s and was a new universe designed to bring new readers to comic books. By giving all the heroes fresh new starts, it got rid of all the complicated history of the characters, making it easy for new readers to start with. The most popular series from this line was ‘Ultimate Spider-Man.’

This series focused on a much younger Peter Parker, returning him to high school and telling his origin from scratch. Near the end of the run, it was announced that Peter Parker would be killed off and a new Spider-Man would take his place. That’s when readers were introduced to Miles Morales in 2011, who would become the main Spider-Man of Earth 1610.

How did Miles Morales become Spider-Man?

Miles came from a working-class home in Brooklyn, New York, where his mum was a nurse and his dad was a police officer.  His uncle, Aaron Davis, was secretly the Prowler, and one day when he broke into an abandoned Oscorp building, a genetically altered spider crawled into his bag. 

Against his parent’s wishes, Miles would frequently visit his uncle, and one day, when he was sitting in Aaron’s apartment. The spider crawled out of the bag and bit Miles. This gave Miles the same powers as Peter Parker but with a few added extras like venom sting and camouflage. 

Shortly after being bitten, Miles decides he doesn’t want or need to be Spider-Man as, at this point, Peter Parker is still alive. After seeing on the news that Spider-Man was fighting the Sinister Six, Morales realizes that Peter may be in serious danger and decides to go to try to help him.

By the time he gets there, the Sinister Six have already been beaten, but Peter Parker has died in the process. This causes Miles to feel guilty and take on the mantle of Spider-Man, even though he was initially rejected by other heroes who knew Peter Parker.  After gaining the trust of Nick Fury and the other heroes, they gift Miles with a brand new suit and web shooters, officially solidifying him as Spider-Man of Earth 1610.

How did Miles join Earth 616?

As mentioned earlier, Miles Morales became Spider-Man after Peter Parker had died. This may confuse you as you have probably seen Miles and Peter fighting alongside each other, but this is because Miles actually got transported to the main 616 Earth of the Marvel Universe.

This happened during the comic book event, ‘Secret Wars,’ that took place in 2015, which was a major multiversal war to stop all the earths from collapsing into one another. At the end of the comic, some universes and their inhabitants were destroyed, which happened with Earth 1610. However, some characters from this Earth got transported to Earth 616. This included Miles Morales and his supporting cast. 

Due to the character’s popularity, there was no way that Marvel would kill him off, so they had him join the main universe and fight alongside the other heroes. This has since given us multiple team-ups with Miles and Peter, which have also been translated into films and video games.
