Here’s When & Where Obi-Wan Kenobi Killed Darth Maul
One of the biggest Star Wars rivalries is between Obi-Wan Kenobi and Darth Maul. The two faced each other multiple times through the Clone Wars until Obi-Wan finally put an end to Maul once and for all. The question is, where and when did this happen? Here’s when and where Obi-Wan Kenobi killed Darth Maul!
Obi-Wan killed Darth Maul in ‘Star Wars Rebels’ Season 3, Episode 20. The episode was titled ‘Twin Suns,’ which is fitting as Maul met his end on Tatooine near the home of Luke Skywalker. After Maul located Kenobi on the desert planet, The two of them got into a duel where Obi-Wan was able to kill Maul with one strike, finally ending their almost 20-year rivalry.
Now that we have briefly discussed when and where Obi-Wan killed Darth Maul, let’s analyze it in more detail. If you are interested in why Maul hates Kenobi, how he located him, and how he survived being chopped in half, stay with us and keep reading!
Why does Darth Maul hate Obi-Wan?
There is one simple reason for Maul’s hatred of Kenobi. That is simply because he always beats him. After their duel on Naboo, Darth Maul’s hatred started against Obi-Wan; Darth Maul killed Qui-Gon Jinn and had Obi-Wan vulnerable hanging from a ledge.
This caused the Sith Lord to get overconfident, leading Obi-Wan to get the upper hand and slice him through the waist, causing him to fall to his ‘death.’ Ever since Maul was chopped in half by Obi-Wan, he has tried to kill him countless times and failed every single time. He has gotten the upper hand in some battles and even killed Obi-Wan’s love, Satine Kryze. No matter what, though, Obi-Wan always survives their encounters, and his being alive fills Darth Maul with so much anger.
Another reason is that Darth Maul and Darth Sidious were supposed to bring back and avenge the Sith. With Kenobi beating Darth Maul in battle, it halted those plans and caused Palpatine to view Maul as wasting effort and training. Palpating would replace Darth Maul with Count Dooku. Maul would see this entirely as Kenobi’s fault, which led to his ultimate hatred towards the Jedi Knight.
How did Darth Maul survive his wounds?
After Darth Maul was defeated on Naboo, he was presumed dead by the Jedi and Palpatine. His brother, Savage Opress, found him on Loth Minor. When he was found, he had no memory of who he was and had attached spider-like legs to where his legs used to be.
Savage Opress took him back to their home planet of Dathomir, where the Nightsisters would use their magic to restore his mind and make him remember who he was. He would then take Savage Opress as his apprentice and become obsessed with finding Obi-Wan.
Not only was it the Nightsisters that kept him alive, but also his sheer hatred for Obi-Wan, which fuelled his Dark Side power and kept him alive. Once his mind was restored, his hatred for Kenobi fuelled his power and became his obsession for the rest of his life. While it was this hatred that made him stronger and kept him alive, it would also be what would lead him to his eventual death.
How did Darth Maul locate Obi-Wan?
During the series, ‘Star Wars Rebels,’ Maul is a recurring villain. He faces Ezra and Kanan multiple times, with his end goal being to use them to locate Kenobi. Darth Maul wants to use both a Jedi and Sith Holocron to find out where Obi-Wan is. When he discovers that Ezra Bridger learns the location of Obi-Wan from the Holocron, he manipulates him into thinking that Obi-Wan is the key to stopping the Empire.
Maul uses this to follow Ezra to Tatooine, where Obi-Wan was watching over Luke Skywalker. When Ezra is talking to Obi-Wan, Maul finds the two of them, and Kenobi sends Ezra away so he can deal with his old enemy.
How did Obi-Wan Kenobi beat Darth Maul?
When the two of them come face to face, Obi-Wan does several things to ensure his victory against Maul. He uses his original stance at first, which he uses in the prequels and the Clone Wars. He then switches to the stance that Alec Guinness used in ‘A New Hope,’ then goes into the stance that Qui-Gon used.
This leads Maul into a false sense of security as he tries to use the same trick he used to kill Qui-Gon Jinn. Obi-Wan uses this against him, changes stances in between the movements, and kills Darth Maul in one swift strike. Like a true Jedi, Kenobi comforts Darth Maul in his last moments, finally ending their long rivalry.
