Hideo Kojima has shared his thoughts on Supergirl after watching the new DC movie in IMAX, and his reaction is getting plenty of attention online.

The Metal Gear Solid and Death Stranding creator often posts short reviews of movies on social media. While he is not a professional film critic, many fans pay close attention to his opinions because of his reputation for cinematic storytelling in video games. This time, Kojima had more to say than a simple “I watched it,” which many of his followers see as a positive sign.

In his post on X, Kojima explained that Supergirl surprised him because it was not the kind of superhero movie he expected.

“I saw ‘Supergirl’ in IMAX. It wasn’t a ‘superhero movie’ about saving the Earth through self-sacrifice as ‘justice’ confronts ‘evil.’ It was a coming-of-age story about saving oneself, Kara, as she struggles with her own trauma.”

Instead of focusing on action and the usual battle between heroes and villains, Kojima felt the movie was more interested in Kara’s personal journey. According to him, the story is about the character dealing with her own emotional pain while learning who she is.

Kojima also compared the movie’s storytelling to classic films. He said Supergirl reminded him less of Mad Max: Fury Road and more of Sergio Leone’s famous western The Good, the Bad and the Ugly.

“Structurally, it feels less like ‘Mad Max: Fury Road’ (2015), where everyone is driven purely by survival instinct beyond notions of good and evil, and more like The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (1966), where heroes, villains, and scoundrels all converge.”

His comments suggest that he appreciated how the movie handled its characters instead of following a simple good-versus-evil formula.

Kojima’s social media posts are usually short, but longtime followers believe the length of his comments often says a lot. When he enjoys a movie, he usually writes a few sentences about what stood out to him. If a film leaves little impression, he often posts nothing more than the fact that he watched it.

That is why many fans have taken his Supergirl comments as a positive reaction, even if he did not praise the movie as highly as he praised Superman last year. His earlier comments about Superman were more enthusiastic, making it clear that he connected with that film even more.

Kojima’s reaction comes at a time when Supergirl has received a mixed response from critics. According to Rotten Tomatoes, the movie currently has a 57 percent critics score. While that is not one of DC’s lowest-rated movies, it is well below the 83 percent earned by Superman in 2025.

Audience reactions have been more positive. The film currently holds a 76 percent audience score on Rotten Tomatoes’ Popcornmeter, showing that many moviegoers have enjoyed it more than professional critics.

The movie is also facing challenges at the box office. Early weekend estimates suggest Supergirl is expected to earn between $62 million and $77 million worldwide during its opening weekend. Considering reports that the film cost around $170 million to make before marketing expenses, that is not the start Warner Bros. was likely hoping for.

Even so, Kojima’s comments show that Supergirl found at least one admirer who appreciated its focus on Kara’s personal story rather than simply delivering another traditional superhero adventure.
