Hollywood Mourns Sam Neill As ‘Jurassic’ Franchise Stars Celebrate His Legendary Career

Sam Neill’s Hollywood family and longtime friends are remembering the beloved actor after his death at 78, with emotional tributes pouring in from across the entertainment world.

Neill, best known for playing Dr. Alan Grant in the original Jurassic Park and its sequel Jurassic World Dominion, was honored by director Colin Trevorrow, who shared a heartfelt message about the actor’s kindness, talent, and the impact he had on those around him.

Trevorrow, who directed Neill in Jurassic World Dominion, wrote on Instagram that Neill was much more than just a talented performer.

“Sam Neill was a deeply soulful and beautiful man,” Trevorrow wrote. “He was a friend and collaborator at a challenging time, and his strength gave us all strength.” The director also remembered Neill’s calm personality and the way he brought a special presence to every role he played.

“I’ll remember him for his tranquility, his love of wine, and for the calm assuredness he brought to his characters,” Trevorrow continued. “It’s not every lifetime you get to befriend a legend. Forever grateful.”

Neill’s fellow New Zealand actor Karl Urban also shared his sadness following the news. In a comment on the family’s Instagram announcement, Urban described Neill as a major inspiration and a person who helped represent New Zealand around the world. “A beautiful man, a national treasure who gave so much to New Zealand and the world. God speed Sam,” Urban wrote.

Actor and television host Alan Cumming also remembered Neill, calling him a special person who would be deeply missed. “Ahhh Sam, what a glorious beautiful man. You are missed. Sorry to the family for your immense loss,” Cumming said.

Other stars, including singer Kylie Minogue, actress Rachel Griffiths, and actor Richard E. Grant, also paid tribute to Neill. Minogue simply shared “Vale Sam 💔,” using the Australian term for goodbye. Griffiths, who directed Neill in the 2019 film Ride Like a Girl, remembered their friendship and referenced Neill’s passion project, Two Paddocks, his winery in Central Otago. Grant, who knew Neill for three decades, described him as a true gentleman and shared how much support Neill had given him during difficult moments in his life.

Universal Pictures also honored the actor, calling him a “Jurassic legend” in a post on social media.

Neill’s influence reached beyond Hollywood, with leaders in New Zealand and Australia also recognizing his contributions. New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon praised Neill for helping bring New Zealand stories to audiences around the world.

“Sir Sam Neill was one of the greats,” Luxon wrote. “For more than fifty years he took New Zealand stories to the world and his talents helped make our film industry into what it is today.”

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese also shared his thoughts, highlighting Neill’s unique personality and the strength he showed throughout his career.

“Wry and dry, thoughtful and laconic, Sam fought illness with the same dignity, humor and conviction that gave strength to his every performance,” Albanese said.

Neill’s career spanned more than five decades, with memorable roles in films and shows including Jurassic Park, Peaky Blinders, and many other projects. His performances, humor, and generosity left a lasting impression on fans, friends, and fellow actors around the world.
