While there are a lot of different Star Wars characters with different lightsaber colors, the one incredibly unique lightsaber color is white, which is set to make a return in the events of the upcoming ‘Ahsoka’ series. We know that Ahsoka Tano owns a pair of white lightsabers she first wielded during the events of ‘Star Wars: Rebels’ and ‘The Mandalorian.’ But how and why did Ahsoka get her white lightsabers?

Ahsoka got her white lightsabers when she purified the corrupted red lightsaber of the Sixth Brother, who she defeated on Raada. Ahsoka got these new lightsabers so she could return to action and help the innocent people of the galaxy against the tyranny of the Empire.

The thing about Ahsoka’s white lightsabers is that the white color doesn’t really mean anything special. Ahsoka’s sabers are white because that happens when a corrupted and “bled” Kyber crystal is purged of its dark side. That was what happened when Ahsoka purged the corruption from the Inquisitor’s lightsaber. So, with that said, let’s look at how and why Ahsoka got her white lightsabers.

How did Ahsoka get the white lightsabers?

Ahsoka has one of the most interesting storylines in the entire narrative of Star Wars because she is one of the few characters that lived through the events of both the Clone Wars and the era of the Empire. She is set to return in the upcoming ‘Ahsoka’ series that’s set during the timeline of ‘The Mandalorian’ and will talk about the impending rise of the First Order.

So, ever since Ahsoka returned to the Star Wars storyline in ‘Star Wars: Rebels,’ she has been wielding two white lightsabers instead of the standard green ones that she used during the events of the Clone Wars. And the story of how Ahsoka got her lightsabers is very interesting.

We know that Ahsoka left the Jedi Order back in the events of the Clone Wars when she felt betrayed by the Jedi Council after Barriss Offee framed her for the bombing of the Jedi Temple. Ahsoka thought the Council didn’t trust her enough to hear her side of the story. That was when she left the temple and surrendered her original lightsabers.

In the final season of ‘Star Wars: Clone Wars,’ Anakin gave Ahsoka back her lightsabers but tinkered with them to turn their blades blue. She used those lightsabers in the Siege of Mandalore when Bo-Katan Kryze asked her and the Republic for help. With those sabers, she defeated Darth Maul but ended up in the middle of Order 66 while she was on the ship called the Tribunal to ferry a captured Maul back to Coruscant.

With the help of Maul and Captain Rex, Ahsoka survived Order 66 but lost the Tribunal and every clone inside it in a crash. She faked her death by depositing her lightsabers in the ship’s crash site so the Empire wouldn’t go looking for her.

During the first year of the Empire’s reign, Ahsoka lived a quiet life away from everything happening in the galaxy. She lived a farmer’s life on a planet called Raada until she had to use the Force to save two of her friends from trouble. This placed her on the radar of Bail Organa, who recruited her into his secret Rebellion. But at the same time, Darth Vader’s Inquisitors also heard about what she was doing.

The Sixth Brother (it was an unknown Inquisitor in ‘Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi’) was sent by the Inquisitorius to Raada as this enemy was wreaking havoc all over the planet in the hopes of finding Ahsoka. When Ahsoka finally confronted him, she could easily defeat the Sixth Brother without using a lightsaber. Ahsoka overloaded the Kyber crystal in the Sixth Brother’s dual-bladed spinning lightsaber. The saber exploded and killed the Sixth Brother.

Knowing that she didn’t have a lightsaber that she could use as an agent working for Bail Organa, Ahsoka used the Sixth Brother’s lightsaber and purified the “bled-out” Kyber crystals in it. Using the Force to purify the crystal allowed Ahsoka to purge the Kyber crystals from the dual-bladed lightsaber.

Ahsoka used whatever parts she salvaged while on Raada to construct a new lightsaber with the purified Kyber crystals she got from the Inquisitor’s saber. The blades of her saber were white because their crystals were once bled-out to turn red but had been purified. As such, what was left was the pure form of the Kyber crystals without their corruption, and that’s why the crystals emit white blades.

Why did Ahsoka get the white lightsabers?

As mentioned, Ahsoka no longer had her original lightsabers. She faked her own death by depositing her sabers on the crash site of the Tribunal to convince the Empire that she died during Order 66 as well. Of course, living in secret allowed Ahsoka to continue in life without needing her lightsabers.

Ahsoka, however, realized that the only way that she could help Bail Organa and his rising Rebellion was to construct new lightsabers. She traveled to the planet of Ilum, where the Jedi harvested Kyber crystals in the past. But the Empire had begun mining the planet, so Ahsoka could no longer get Kyber crystals the conventional way.

So, when Ahsoka returned to Raada to find the Sixth Brother, she decided this was her best chance to get a Kyber crystal. As such, she defeated the Inquisitor and salvaged the crystals in his lightsaber to create a new set of lightsabers that emitted white blades.

Of course, there’s a good chance that Ahsoka never expected the crystals to emit white blades because this was the first time in canon that Kyber crystals that the dark side of the Force had bled out were purified and purged of their corruption. As such, Ahsoka was probably just as surprised as everyone else when her lightsabers emitted white blades instead of the standard colors that we often see from Jedi lightsabers.
