The Marvel Cinematic Universe is once again looking backward as it builds toward its next chapter, with the Russo Brothers returning to direct both ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ and ‘Avengers: Secret Wars.’ That kind of full-circle moment naturally has fans wondering which familiar faces might come back for the ride.

Few names carry as much weight in that conversation as Thanos. Josh Brolin’s version of the Mad Titan anchored the franchise’s biggest storyline, appearing first in ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ and ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’ before becoming the driving antagonist of ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ and ‘Avengers: Endgame,’ where the character ultimately met his end.

That history is exactly why Brolin’s latest comments on the subject have set off a fresh wave of speculation. While promoting his new project ‘The Dog Stars,’ Brolin was asked directly whether Thanos could ever make his way back into the MCU, and rather than shutting the idea down, he gave an answer that left the door wide open.

“I don’t know how to answer that question,” Brolin said, before pivoting into a broader reflection on Thanos’s worldview, telling Collider that he’s begun wondering if the villain’s reasoning about culling half the universe to save the other half wasn’t entirely wrong when he looks at the state of the real world today.

It’s a striking non-answer, the kind that reads less like a denial and more like an actor carefully avoiding a spoiler he’s not supposed to give. Brolin has leaned into that same ambiguity before when discussing Thanos’s future in the franchise.

Back in 2024, Brolin told Collider that reprising the role would need to feel earned rather than forced, comparing it to his approach toward returning for the ‘Sicario’ sequel. He added that he would ultimately do whatever the Russo Brothers asked of him, signaling that his hesitation has more to do with story logic than any reluctance to put the purple suit back on.

Complicating matters is the fact that Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom has been positioned as the MCU’s next major antagonist heading into ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ and ‘Avengers: Secret Wars.’ That casting choice has fueled plenty of debate over whether there’s even room for Thanos to reclaim the spotlight, or whether any appearance would need to come in a smaller, more surprising capacity.

Brolin has continued voicing Thanos in animated form across Disney+’s ‘What If…?’ series, keeping the character alive in the multiverse even after his live-action death. Given how flexible the MCU’s multiverse rules have proven to be, a variant version of Thanos returning for a cameo or larger role remains entirely plausible.

News of Brolin’s latest comments spread quickly across social media, with one widely circulated post recapping the exchange racking up tens of thousands of views within hours. Fans in the replies were quick to parse every word of his response, treating the actor’s hesitation as a sign that something might genuinely be in the works.

For now, Marvel Studios hasn’t confirmed anything about Thanos’s involvement in either upcoming Avengers film, leaving Brolin’s cryptic response as the closest thing fans have to a hint. Whether that’s a deliberate tease or simply an actor being careful with his words, it’s clear the Mad Titan is still very much part of the MCU conversation.
