Jaafar Jackson Reveals Why Janet Jackson Wasn’t in ‘Michael’: She Might Be Making Her Own Film

The “Michael” biopic became one of the year’s biggest box office surprises, grossing more than $1 billion worldwide while bringing Michael Jackson’s story to life through his real-life nephew, Jaafar Jackson. Despite that success, one absence has continued to draw scrutiny from fans and press alike: Michael’s superstar sister, Janet Jackson, is nowhere to be found in the film.

That omission sparked plenty of speculation when “Michael” first hit theaters, with fellow Jackson sibling La Toya offering the initial public explanation at the film’s Los Angeles premiere back in April.

Speaking to Variety at the time, La Toya revealed that Janet had actually been asked to be portrayed in the film but declined the offer, saying, “I wish everybody was in the movie. She was asked and she kindly declined so you have to respect her wishes.”

Now Jaafar himself is offering a new layer to that explanation, and it points toward something bigger potentially on the horizon. Speaking with GQ Middle East, Jaafar suggested Janet’s absence may have less to do with any rift and more to do with her own separate creative plans, explaining, “I don’t want to speak too early, but Janet has ideas of maybe doing her own film. So having someone portrayed in this and then choosing a different actor for her own is just…” he trails off, leaving the thought deliberately unfinished.

That framing suggests a fairly pragmatic concern on Janet’s part: if she’s genuinely developing her own biopic project, having an actress cast to portray her within someone else’s film first could complicate casting for her own eventual production. Digital Music News, which also covered the comments, noted that Jaafar suggested Janet may not have wanted an actress selected to play her before she’d had the chance to choose who would portray her in her own story.

Jaafar has consistently downplayed any suggestion of bad blood between Janet and the “Michael” production, framing her absence as a practical decision rather than a personal snub. That’s a notable contrast to earlier reporting from Page Six, which claimed drama unfolded during a private family screening of the film, alleging Janet “had something negative about almost every scene,” from the acting to the makeup, according to the outlet’s sourcing at the time.

Director Antoine Fuqua has also weighed in on Janet’s decision, making clear he holds no ill will toward her choice. Speaking at the film’s premiere, Fuqua said, “I have so much respect and love for Janet, but you know it’s OK. She’s supportive of Jaafar and that’s what matters,” reinforcing that Janet’s absence from the film hasn’t affected her relationship with her nephew or his performance.

A potential Janet Jackson biopic hasn’t been officially confirmed by the star or any studio, but the timing lines up with broader momentum building around the extended Jackson family’s on-screen presence. With “Michael” already confirmed to be getting a sequel, and Jaafar now hinting at Janet’s own separate project, the door appears open for what could eventually become a sprawling, interconnected chapter of Jackson family biopics.

Janet’s own career achievements would certainly support a feature-length treatment of her own. As one of the best-selling artists of all time with 26 Grammy nominations and five wins, her story stands entirely on its own merits, independent of her brother’s legacy, giving any potential film plenty of material to work with beyond her connection to Michael.

For now, fans eager to see Janet’s story told on screen will have to wait for more concrete confirmation, but Jaafar’s comments mark the clearest indication yet that such a project may genuinely be in the works.

What do you think about the possibility of Janet telling her own story on screen?
