James Gunn Praises ‘X-Men ’97’ But Has No Plans To Emulate It With DCU

‘X-Men ’97’ so far has been widely successful. The show was praised for its authenticity and similarities to the original show while keeping up with the current sensibilities and storytelling techniques as well as animation.

Ever since the first episode aired, the show received consistently high ratings. It’s been already renewed for season 2, and season 3 is currently in the plans with Marvel execs likely to keep it going for as long as possible.

It’s truly been a breath of fresh air, especially after a series of flops for the studio, which prompted them to change their whole strategy and turn toward more animated content in the future. People seem to like it, and it seems to be impervious to superhero fatigue, surprisingly James Gunn agrees with it.

He was recently asked on Threads what he thinks about the show, and he responded that it’s fun and unique but he has no plans to emulate it as a part of his own strategy with DCU, and his explanation sounds logical.

This might break some fans’ hearts, but James Gunn has no plans to revive Justice League Unlimited. However fans of DC don’t have to despair, more than a year ago ‘Creature Commadons’ animated TV show was announced, with Gunn himself writing the script.

The upcoming animated series will depict the homonymous team of superhumans, which first appeared in the source material in ‘Weird War Tales’ #93, by J. M. DeMatteis and Pat Broderick, in November 1980. The team consists of a human team leader, a werewolf, a vampire, a gorgon, and Frankenstein’s monster.

In the source material, this team was created as a result of Project M, which assembled the team to fight against the Axis powers during World War II. ‘Creature Commandos’ is supposed to be the first DCU project to arrive with a release date sometime in 2024. Gunn recently commented that so far the project looks insanely good and he loves what the animators did with it.
