Karl Urban has opened up about a difficult time during filming of the final season of The Boys, revealing that he was dealing with a serious illness while shooting one of the show’s most intense sequences. The actor spoke about his experience during a Denver FanExpo panel, according to fan recordings from the event shared online.

Urban said the demanding final battle scenes were physically exhausting even under normal conditions, but he was struggling significantly at the time.

He explained, “I mean it was you know physically quite a taxing fight to do (Homelander vs Butcher) I was actually chronically ill at the time. I had some nasty flu and I didn’t tell the producer this but I would go home and cough up blood. Uh I was not well.”

His comments gave fans a new perspective on the production of the finale, which includes one of the most violent and emotionally heavy confrontations in the series.

The final episode of The Boys features a major showdown between Butcher and Homelander inside the Oval Office, where Homelander attempts to declare himself a god on live television. The situation escalates into chaos when the rest of the team arrives to stop him.

A key turning point in the battle comes when Kimiko uses a specially designed radiation blast that removes a Supe’s powers. The attack successfully strips Homelander of everything that made him superhuman, leaving him completely vulnerable for the first time.

With Homelander powerless and terrified, Butcher steps in and ends the fight, killing him on live television. The moment marks the end of their long-running conflict.

However, the victory does not bring peace to Butcher. The aftermath shows him emotionally destroyed after being rejected by Ryan, who refuses to join him and walks away. On top of that, Butcher also loses his dog, Terror, which deepens his emotional collapse.

In the final stretch of the story, Butcher decides to go forward with a dangerous plan involving a Supe-killing virus. He attempts to release it through Vought Tower’s sprinkler system in what would have been a global catastrophe.

Hughie arrives and tries to stop him, leading to a final confrontation. Butcher hesitates at the last moment, but Hughie ultimately shoots him. Before dying, Butcher tells Hughie that he would not have stopped, giving him a final reassurance that his actions were necessary.

Urban’s comments about filming the finale while being seriously ill add a new layer to the already intense production story behind the series. Fans have reacted strongly to both the emotional weight of the ending and the physical toll it took on the cast to bring it to life, based on accounts shared from the FanExpo panel.
