Kirk Acevedo, 54, Talks About Financial Struggles Facing Working Actors Today
According to a conversation on the podcast An Actor Despairs, actor Kirk Acevedo has spoken openly about the financial pressure many working actors are facing in Hollywood today. The 54-year-old actor, known for his long career in film and television, explained that even experienced performers are struggling to stay financially stable.
Acevedo, who grew up in the South Bronx, first built his reputation in theater before landing his breakout role on the HBO series Oz. From there, he went on to work on major projects, including Band of Brothers, the Planet of the Apes franchise, and collaborations with filmmakers like Steven Spielberg and Terrence Malick.
Despite that long list of credits, he said the reality behind the scenes is much harder than people think. On the podcast, Acevedo explained that he had to sell his home after going through a long period without steady work.
He said the slowdown started during the pandemic and became worse as the industry changed and fewer roles became available for actors in his category. He said, So, I went from working non-stop to now, I got to sell my house. I got to sell my house, and everyone’s going through this.
He also talked about how often he comes close to landing major roles but does not get them. According to Acevedo, being a close second still means no job at all, which makes long gaps between work even more difficult.
He pointed out that competition has increased in recent years. Big movie stars are now taking roles in television projects, which reduces opportunities for middle level actors who depend on guest roles and recurring parts to make a living.
Acevedo also shared that his financial struggles were made even harder by a serious health issue. Just before turning 50, he suffered a hemorrhagic stroke. He said doctors never found a clear cause, even though it happened during a very stressful time in his life.
He added that he is now healthy and grateful to have recovered fully. Throughout his career, Acevedo has remained active in both television and streaming projects. He appeared in shows like Arrow, 12 Monkeys, and Kingdom, and also had roles in The Offer and Star Trek Picard, where he played Krinn.
More recently, he joined the second season of Lioness, the Taylor Sheridan series, playing a character named Gutierrez. He has also been a familiar face in long-running procedural dramas such as Law & Order and CSI.
Even with the challenges he described, Acevedo said he continues to focus on acting and appreciates the support he has received from others in the industry. His comments highlight how even experienced actors can face uncertainty in today’s entertainment world.
