‘Lanterns’ Ignites HBO Max With DC Studios’ Biggest Series Premiere Ever
DC Studios has been carefully building out its television slate under James Gunn and Peter Safran’s rebooted DCU, and each new series has carried extra weight as the studio tries to prove its small-screen output can match the ambition of its theatrical relaunch. That pressure has only intensified given how much scrutiny superhero franchises face when translating their content to streaming.
That scrutiny made this week’s premiere numbers especially significant. “Lanterns,” the cosmic detective drama co-created by Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof, and Tom King, launched this past Sunday night on HBO and HBO Max, marking the third live-action series to arrive within the new DCU continuity.
The results have exceeded expectations across the board. “Lanterns” pulled in 9.3 million global viewers within its first three days of availability, according to Variety, making it the biggest premiere for any DC Studios show on HBO Max to date and placing it among the platform’s top five series launches overall.
Of that global total, 6.6 million viewers tuned in from the United States alone, a number that outperformed several of HBO’s recent flagship debuts. According to The Hollywood Reporter, that U.S. figure beat out “It: Welcome to Derry’s” 5.7 million three-day launch, “The Penguin’s” 5.3 million over four days, and “True Detective: Night Country’s” single-night debut of 2 million viewers.
Those comparisons matter because all three of those shows went on to become major hits for the network. “It: Welcome to Derry” ultimately averaged 27.1 million global viewers, while “The Penguin” and “True Detective: Night Country” settled in at 19.8 million and 17.5 million respectively, suggesting “Lanterns” has real room to grow as word of mouth builds throughout its run.
The series follows Kyle Chandler’s Hal Jordan, a longtime Green Lantern Corps legend, and Aaron Pierre’s John Stewart, a new recruit thrust into training under him, as the two intergalactic cops investigate a murder rooted in the American heartland that quickly spirals into something with far larger cosmic implications. That premise has drawn early praise for blending detective-noir sensibilities with the show’s inherently fantastical superhero mythology.
Beyond topping other DC Studios series, “Lanterns” also outperformed HBO’s own “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms,” which drew 6.7 million U.S. viewers over its first three days back in January. That comparison places “Lanterns” firmly among the network’s strongest recent launches across genres, not just within the superhero space specifically.

The show’s momentum hasn’t slowed since its debut either. As of this week, the premiere episode remains the No. 1 title on HBO Max’s daily Top 10 list, a streak that’s held steady since Sunday’s launch and signals sustained interest beyond just opening-weekend curiosity.
The cast surrounding Chandler and Pierre includes Kelly Macdonald, Garret Dillahunt, Poorna Jagannathan, Jason Ritter, Ulrich Thomsen, Paul Ben-Victor, J. Alphonse Nicholson, and Jasmine Cephas Jones, with Nathan Fillion set to reprise his role as fellow Lantern Corps member Guy Gardner later in the season. New episodes continue rolling out weekly on Sundays.
For a franchise still working to establish its footing across film and television simultaneously, “Lanterns” delivering DC Studios’ strongest streaming debut yet offers an early but meaningful vote of confidence. With co-creator Tom King already emphasizing that the show is meant to carry real narrative weight within the DCU rather than functioning as disposable filler, these premiere numbers suggest audiences may be responding to that ambition exactly as intended.
