Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio have built one of the strongest partnerships in modern film, and many people now compare it to Scorsese’s legendary run with Robert De Niro. The director has made some of his most famous movies with both actors, and he has never been shy about how much he trusts DiCaprio on screen.

In a past interview with Deadline, Scorsese spoke openly about why he keeps coming back to DiCaprio. He described him as a natural film actor who understands how to work with the camera.

Scorsese said DiCaprio is not afraid of uncomfortable emotions and is willing to go to dark places if the role demands it. He also pointed out that the camera seems to lock onto DiCaprio’s face, especially his eyes, making it easy for viewers to follow what the character is thinking without a single word being said.

That respect clearly goes both ways. DiCaprio has long talked about how much Scorsese’s work shaped him as an actor. When he was asked to name his favorite movie from Scorsese’s career, his answer surprised some people. Instead of picking one of their own films, he chose Taxi Driver.

During a conversation with Scorsese on The Charlie Rose Show, DiCaprio explained that he first saw the movie when he was fifteen years old. He said he was instantly pulled in by Travis Bickle and felt sympathy for the character at the start.

As the story went on, that feeling slowly changed. DiCaprio said he realized he had been fooled into relating to someone who was far more dangerous than he first appeared. He later called Taxi Driver the greatest independent film ever made. Scorsese quickly brushed off the praise and redirected the credit to the film’s writer, Paul Schrader.

Today, DiCaprio is coming off one of the biggest years of his career. He was named TIME’s 2025 Entertainer of the Year, and his latest film, One Battle After Another, has been dominating awards talk. The movie, directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, earned major wins at the Critics’ Choice Awards and put DiCaprio back in the Best Actor race at the Oscars.

His future plans include yet another reunion with Scorsese. The two are preparing to work together on What Happens at Night, a psychological ghost story that will also star Jennifer Lawrence. According to production reports, filming is set to begin in Europe later this winter.

With every new project, the bond between director and actor only seems to grow stronger. Whether DiCaprio is the modern version of De Niro or simply a once-in-a-generation talent in his own lane is still up for debate, but his place in Scorsese’s creative world is clearly secure.

Do you think DiCaprio is Scorsese’s true successor to De Niro, or should the director eventually pass the torch to someone new? Share your thoughts in the comments.
