Kjell Nilsson, the Swedish-born actor and former weightlifter best known for playing Lord Humungus in Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior, has died at the age of 76 in Queensland, Australia.

His family confirmed his death on his Facebook page. According to their statement, Nilsson passed away on July 2 after living with end-stage kidney disease for more than four years. He had been undergoing dialysis three times a week during that time.

The family also explained that Nilsson made the decision to stop dialysis shortly before his death. In their words, “It was a long and painful journey, filled with countless battles to overcome, including the gradual loss of his bodily autonomy. This past Sunday, after much consideration, Kjell made the decision to take back control over his pain and his body by stopping dialysis.”

They added that he died peacefully in his sleep, surrounded by his sons. The statement continued, “The days leading up to his passing were filled with joy, gratitude, peace, and acceptance. He did it his way.”

Born in Gothenburg, Sweden in 1949, Nilsson originally built his career in sports. He moved to Australia in 1980 to work as a weightlifting trainer for Swedish athletes preparing for the Moscow Olympics. His strong physique and imposing presence later opened the door to acting.

That physical presence is what led him to his most iconic role as the masked villain known as Lord Humungus in George Miller’s 1981 film Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior. The character, also referred to in the film as “The Ayatollah of Rock ‘N Rolla,” became one of the most recognizable antagonists in action cinema of the era. The film itself, also known as Mad Max 2, starred Mel Gibson and was shot in Australia, helping establish the global reputation of the franchise.

Nilsson’s performance as Humungus, despite limited screen time, left a lasting cultural impact. The character’s look, voice, and intensity helped define the post-apocalyptic style that Mad Max would become famous for in later installments.

After his breakthrough role, Nilsson continued to appear in smaller screen projects. His credits include The Pirate Movie (1982), the TV film Man of Letters (1984), and The Edge of Power (1989). After a long break from acting, he returned briefly with a final credited role in the 2023 film Howlin’ Refrain, marking a 34-year gap between screen appearances.

Outside of acting, Nilsson reportedly worked in the software industry in Australia, building a life away from Hollywood while maintaining ties to both Sweden and his adopted home.

In their tribute, his family reflected on the way he viewed his life and career. They said, “In his final days, Kjell spoke often of how grateful he was for his bodybuilding and coaching career, for the life he built between the two countries he called home, Sweden and Australia, and for the opportunity to inspire and connect with people around the world through his iconic role as The Lord Humungus. That legacy will never die.”

Nilsson’s death marks the loss of a cult cinema figure whose single defining role helped shape one of the most influential action films of the 1980s.
