Mahershala Ali Finally Says What Fans Have Been Waiting Years to Hear About ‘Blade’

For as long as Marvel’s ‘Blade‘ reboot has existed on paper, it has existed as a punchline about Hollywood development hell. Announced with massive fanfare back in 2019, the film has spent years cycling through directors, writers, and release dates without a single frame ever making it to a movie screen.

Mahershala Ali has remained attached through all of it, offering measured optimism in interview after interview while the project quietly stalled behind the scenes. Fans have gotten used to hearing him say some version of “we’re working on it” every time a reporter brings the film up.

That tone has now shifted in a noticeable way. In a new interview with GQ tied to his upcoming action-thriller ‘Your Mother, Your Mother, Your Mother,’ Ali addressed the state of ‘Blade’ directly, saying he had contractual obligations to Marvel and that the studio simply chose not to move forward, adding that he now feels ready to move past questions about the project altogether and let Marvel field them instead.

“You had me under contract, they have billions of dollars, if they wanted to do the movie, we would’ve done the movie… I feel ready to move on from the Blade questions. Those questions are for them.”

It’s a notably more direct tone than what Ali has offered in the past. Just last year, he was still telling outlets like Variety and The Hollywood Reporter that he remained ready and willing to take on the role, at one point simply saying “call Marvel” and “let them know I’m ready” when asked about the film’s status at the premiere of ‘Jurassic World Rebirth.’

That optimism has clearly worn thin. The comments to GQ arrive on the heels of Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige himself being unusually candid about the film’s failure to launch, describing his own feelings about the situation during an appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast in blunt terms about letting the project stall.

The road to this point has been long and chaotic by any measure. ‘Blade’ has cycled through directors including Bassam Tariq, Yann Demange and Cary Fukunaga, along with a rotating cast of screenwriters, while co-stars Aaron Pierre and Delroy Lindo both exited the project entirely as it repeatedly failed to reach production.

There’s also a personal thread running through Ali’s comments. Tariq, the director originally attached to ‘Blade’ before departing in 2022, has since reunited with Ali on ‘Your Mother, Your Mother, Your Mother,’ the very film Ali was promoting when he addressed the Marvel project’s fate.

That connection isn’t lost on Ali either. He’s suggested that part of what pulled him toward the new project came down to timing, framing it as simply what was meant for him working out while what wasn’t meant for him didn’t, even as he acknowledged no hard feelings toward Marvel in the process.

For a character built around precision and finality, it’s fitting that Ali’s comments finally offer something resembling closure, even if the door hasn’t been formally shut. Marvel has never officially confirmed the reboot is dead, and reports have floated the possibility of introducing Blade elsewhere in the MCU, whether through ‘Midnight Sons,’ a future Avengers project, or a supporting role in another film entirely.

Whether that means Ali’s version of Blade ever makes it to screen remains genuinely uncertain. What does seem clear is that after seven years of cautious optimism, the actor sounds ready to stop being the one answering for a project that never got off the ground.
