Mark Duplass has responded strongly to online claims suggesting that Kane Parsons was not fully responsible for directing “Backrooms.” The film, which is Parsons’ feature-length directorial debut, has been the subject of online discussion, but Duplass dismissed the idea that anyone else was secretly in control on set.

He directly addressed the rumor, saying, “I don’t remember seeing you on set. When I was there, Kane was 100% in control. More so than many directors 3x his age.” His comments were aimed at pushing back against speculation that Parsons had outside help directing the project.

Duplass also explained why he was involved in the film in the first place. He said he often works with young filmmakers and mentors emerging talent, and he initially expected to assist more during production. However, that support was not needed. He said, “I suspect one of the reasons I was hired was because I mentor a lot of young filmmakers … and I was prepared to help out … [but] he didn’t need any of us.”

According to Duplass, Parsons was fully prepared and deeply involved in every part of the production. He described the young director as focused and highly organized, even with such a large and complex project. He said, “He was intensely prepared. He spent the last five years of his life building out one of the most detailed mythologies I’ve ever been a part of … and was very sensitive, calm, and smart with dealing with actors.”

He ended his comments by directly challenging the online speculation. He said, “For all of you who have these thoughts… were you there?” His response made it clear that he believes Parsons was fully in charge of the film throughout production.

“Backrooms” is an upcoming science fiction horror film based on the viral creepypasta and the web series created by Kane Parsons on his YouTube channel Kane Pixels. The story explores a surreal and unsettling universe that first gained popularity online through short-form horror videos. The film expands that concept into a full cinematic experience.

The movie is directed by Parsons and written by Will Soodik. It is being produced by major companies including A24, Chernin Entertainment, Atomic Monster, and 21 Laps Entertainment. The project has attracted attention because Parsons is making his feature debut at a very young age, becoming one of the youngest directors to work with A24.

The cast includes Chiwetel Ejiofor, Renate Reinsve, Mark Duplass, Finn Bennett, and Lukita Maxwell. The film is scheduled for theatrical release on May 29, 2026.

The development of “Backrooms” began after Parsons gained attention in 2022 for his original YouTube horror series. The project quickly expanded into a major studio film after gaining popularity online. Producers James Wan, Shawn Levy, and Osgood Perkins are also involved, adding more industry weight to the production.

Casting continued through 2025, with several major actors joining the project as it moved closer to production. While early rumors and speculation have followed the film due to its internet origins, the creative team has repeatedly emphasized Parsons’ central role in shaping the story and directing the project.

Duplass’ comments reinforce that message, presenting Parsons as a hands-on director with a clear vision, even on a large-scale studio production.
