Marvel Fans Mourn as Beloved ‘Daredevil’ Villain Star Dies at 82
Wai Ching Ho, the actress best known to Marvel fans for playing Madame Gao in Daredevil, has died at the age of 82. The news was shared by her former co-star Peter Shinkoda, who played Nobu Yoshioka in the first season of the Netflix series.
Shinkoda announced Ho’s passing in a post on Instagram, writing, “Just lost someone very special to me. She was one of the coolest. Thinking aloud.” He later shared another tribute, reflecting on the time they spent working together both on and off set.
“I won’t ever forget you. I learned every minute from you when we were together on and off set. We will meet again, my friend. You were beautiful.”
At the time of writing, no cause of death has been made public. Neither Shinkoda nor anyone representing Ho’s family has shared additional details.
Following the news, more friends and colleagues honored Ho on social media. Actor Mahira Kakkar, who appeared alongside her in the National Asian American Theatre Company’s production of Henry VI, also posted a tribute on Instagram. Kakkar remembered Ho as an exceptional performer and praised both her talent and her character.
She described Ho’s performance as King Lear as “riveting,” and called her “a pillar,” “a stellar human,” and “a stellar artist.”
Although Ho worked across film, television, and theater for many years, she became especially well known to Marvel fans through her role as Madame Gao. The mysterious crime boss first appeared in Daredevil season 1 as one of the powerful figures controlling the criminal underworld of Hell’s Kitchen. She worked alongside Wilson Fisk, Nobu, and other major crime leaders while staying one step ahead of Matt Murdock throughout much of the story.
Unlike many of the show’s villains, Madame Gao survived the events of Daredevil and later returned in Iron Fist and The Defenders. Those appearances revealed that she was one of the leaders of the ancient organization known as the Hand, making her one of the most important recurring villains from Marvel’s Netflix era.
Even after The Defenders ended, fans continued to wonder if Madame Gao was still alive because her death was never clearly shown on screen. That led to years of speculation that she could eventually appear in Daredevil: Born Again. With the Disney+ series bringing back several characters from the Netflix shows, many viewers believed a return was possible.
However, following Ho’s passing, that possibility now seems far less likely, even as Daredevil: Born Again continues expanding its connection to the earlier Marvel series.
Outside of Marvel, Ho built an impressive acting career that lasted for decades. Born in Hong Kong on November 16, 1943, she appeared in a long list of television shows and movies. Her screen credits include Law & Order, Law & Order: Criminal Intent, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, Flight of the Conchords, The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, Orange Is the New Black, Fresh Off the Boat, The Good Cop, New Amsterdam, Hustlers, Law & Order: Organized Crime, and Only Murders in the Building.
Animation fans also know her as the voice of Grandma Wu in Pixar’s 2022 film Turning Red, which received an Academy Award nomination for Best Animated Feature and earned widespread praise from critics.
On stage, Ho appeared in productions including Henry VI, Endlings, Snow in Midsummer, and Pearl’s Beauty Salon, earning respect throughout the theater community.
With a career that stretched across stage and screen, Wai Ching Ho leaves behind a lasting legacy. Whether audiences remember her as the calm but intimidating Madame Gao, the loving Grandma Wu, or through one of her many theater performances, her work continues to be appreciated by fans and fellow actors alike.
