Marvel Studios usually saves the official announcements of upcoming projects for the conventions such as San Diego Comic-Con, Disney’s D23 Expo, or Disney Investor Day. But we live in a world where it’s hard to keep a secret, and the Internet is all around us, so we usually know what projects Marvel Studios is developing for us even before they are officially announced. While that might be a good thing on the one hand, on the other hand, it allows basically anyone with a social media account to spread a rumor about something that is easily believable but absolutely untrue.

Last year there was a report that Marvel Studios was developing a new Hulk solo movie with Mark Ruffalo set to star. According to the report, the movie was supposed to be called World War Hulk and loosely adapt the known comic book storyline of the same name. However, Marvel Studios never provided any official statements, so we’ve all taken that report seriously. Of course, that didn’t stop the fans from believing, especially after the movie was teased under the table in the She-Hulk series finale last October.

But now — change of scenery! According to Divinity Seeker, the World War Hulk movie was actually never in development, and it was never planned at Marvel Studios. The situation with the character of Hulk is pretty tricky because Marvel Studios has the right to use the character in the MCU, but Universal Pictures still holds the rights for the Hulk solo movies. Universal distributed 2003’s Hulk and 2008’s The Incredible Hulk.

So, to make a new Hulk movie in the MCU, Disney would either need to reacquire the rights from Universal or make a deal similar to the one they made with Sony to use Spider-Man in the MCU. On the other hand, it doesn’t seem Universal is ready for another Hulk movie, and Disney isn’t willing to share the profit the potential Hulk movie would earn.

The report mentioned how Hulk’s story would continue to be developed through other MCU projects in which the character will appear. Marvel Studios already did the same with his development through Avengers movies and Thor: Ragnarok, although the fans aren’t very happy with the current status of the Hulk after Avengers: Endgame. Only Kevin Feige knows what Marvel Studios has in store for the Hulk in the future.

Mark Ruffalo reprised the role of Bruce Banner, aka Smart Hulk, in the She-Hulk series last year. And Ruffalo will presumably return in the upcoming movie Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, although that is yet to be confirmed.
