Fans of the Michael Jackson biopic ‘Michael‘ are taking the celebration to the streets. British fan account Giorgio A Tardio shared news this week of a London gathering billed as “The Billion Box Office Celebration,” set to take over Camden High Street on Saturday, July 25, from 5 pm to 7 pm, timed to the film’s push toward the ten-figure mark worldwide.

The event is being organized by fan communities MJ Remembered and Tom Jackson Vibes, in collaboration with Blues Mobile Party and Michael Movie Supporters, according to the flyer circulating online. It follows a pattern of grassroots meetups that have popped up around the film’s release, with fans gathering to dance, sing, and mark the movie’s box office achievements in person rather than just online.

The timing lines up with where the film actually sits financially. As of July 6, 2026, ‘Michael’ had grossed $991.4 million worldwide, putting it within striking distance of the billion-dollar mark. The film earned $371.2 million domestically and $620.1 million internationally, with strong holdover business in territories like the United Kingdom keeping the total climbing well into its theatrical run.

‘Michael’ follows the early decades of the singer’s life, from his childhood fronting the Jackson 5 through the Bad tour era, and stars his real-life nephew Jaafar Jackson in the lead role alongside Juliano Valdi as a young Michael. The film was directed by Antoine Fuqua and written by John Logan, with a supporting cast that includes Colman Domingo, Nia Long, Miles Teller, and Laura Harrier.

The movie has already rewritten box office history for the genre. It opened to $97.2 million domestically, setting the record for a biographical musical film, and by mid June had crossed $911.9 million globally to surpass ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ as the highest grossing musical biopic ever made. Days later it also overtook ‘Oppenheimer’s $975 million to become the highest grossing biographical film of all time.

Beyond the numbers, ‘Michael’ has become something of a communal theater experience. Organized flash mobs have broken out in cities from Manhattan to London, with audiences dancing in the aisles and treating screenings like concerts, a level of interactive fan behavior that outlets have compared to the midnight movie culture around ‘The Rocky Horror Picture Show’. The Camden event looks to be an extension of that same energy, moving the party from inside the cinema to the street outside.

Lionsgate is already looking past this milestone. A sequel covering more of Jackson’s life is in development, suggesting the studio sees the door staying open for the story well beyond this summer’s box office run. Whether or not ‘Michael’ has officially crossed the billion-dollar line by July 25, fans in Camden clearly aren’t waiting for the official confirmation to start celebrating.

What do you think about Michael Jackson fans organizing a street celebration for 'Michael' before it reaches $1 billion?
